Vision processing with an FPGA is something that interests me and I was
thinking of using the camera module on the CMUcam. It is called the
C3088 (http://www.electronics123.com/s.nl/it.A/id.2577/.f ). The only
problem I saw was that the module uses 5V and that the Nexys 2 board
used 3.3V. I was wondering whether the Spartan 3 FPGA on it was 5V
tolerant and what cameras anyone else has used with FPGAs.

I thought some of the pins on the Digilent Spartan3 board were 5V tolerant because the io headers on the board sourced 5V, but the manual clearly says they are not. I would check your datasheet.

The C3038 module is a similar to the C3088, but uses the OV6630 which
operates at 3.3V:

One other item of interest to point out.....the OV6620 chip is considered
obsolete by Omnivision, and has been for awhile....I don't even think they
are making any more of them....most of the camera modules out there with the
chip on them are coming out of old inventory sitting somewhere.

As far as I can tell, OV is trying to get away from the CIF resolution
imagers, in favor of VGA. They did do a square imager with 400x400 which
they were trying to do 3G video conferencing with, but VGA seems like the
way it is going, because you can easily divide down the frame into CIF
resolution. The latest Omnivision devices in this series, are the OV7670,
and OV6690 modules. The O7670 is the one that was in the head of the Pleo
dino. Do a little poking around and you can find modules for these...here
is one on eBay.

These are all 3V or 2.8V devices.

Thanks,

-Ted
