Catkin ROS building packages in an overlay.

Has anyone done this and is there a good explanation of what the process is?
 
I tired to follow the tutorial, without much success Sad smile emoticon
 
After I get the wstool,   wstool init  barfs at me.
 
 
BTW    -  making some progress at Ubiquity Robotics:
