Which is the better one….the PRO or the PRO Live?  I noticed they dropped the price on the PRO but on the PRO Live.

I also noticed they are out of stock on the PRO Live, and who knows when they will have more.

Hi Ted,

My understanding is that the PRO Live provides both RGB and depth while the PRO provides depth only (hence the lower price).

Following the URL I didn't see any tech specs (pixel resolution, depth, etc.); how do these compare with the Kinect™?

I was thinking the same, i would think the kinect is better, but who knows. ASUS built this one pretty fast.

The Asus is basically a repackaged Primesense SDK5 box. Therefore, it can support the same max depth/rgb resolution of 30hz VGA.

The comparison is:
 * the Asus is much lighter and smaller.
 * uses only 5V from USB, no external 12V power requirement.
 * I find the Asus easier to mount, as you can easily remove the base. The asus has no motor like the Kinect (but really, how useful is that tilt motor anyways).
 * the Asus supports additional resolution/frequency modes which can reduce the USB bandwidth used
 * Asus has stereo microphones with support from OpenNI (but not yet in the ros drivers). The Kinect has 4-microphones, but they really aren't usable without a serious amount of hacking.
 * Asus is a bit more expensive :(

Definitely get the Pro Live as it has the RGB sensor (which also means it is more standard and may play better with software in the long run).

I happen to have an Xtion Pro Live and a Kinect sitting beside me so I compared CPU usage when using one or the other on a 2.0Gz dual-core PC running Ubuntu and ROS.� For the test I used the ROS Electric openni_camera/openni_node.launch file to connect to the camera, then I ran a ROS image viewer for the RGB data and a disparity viewer for the depth stream.� The results for 3 different resolutions were as follows.� Numbers in the cells are %CPU:

I'm not sure these numbers mean anything across machines but there you go anyway.� The Xtion Pro Live is incredibly small and light compared to the Kinect and has all the advantages that Fergs listed.

I've created some Eagle script files that will draw the
outline (outer edges) and show where the mounting holes
are located. While an Eagle script file, these are
human readable and you should have no trouble figuring
out the contents. The "grid" was inches/mm depending
on the board.
