Can I run a gelcell on its side continually? In other word can I
mount it on its side without issues?

Thanks,

Jim, K6JMG

It is my understanding that gel batteries are orientation
insensitive.

Per Wikipedia,

gel battery (also known as a "gel cell") is a VRLA battery with a gelified electrolyte; the sulfuric acid is mixed with silica fume, which makes the resulting mass gel-like and immobile. Unlike a flooded wet-cell lead-acid battery, these batteries do not need to be kept upright. Gel batteries reduce the electrolyte evaporation, spillage (and subsequent corrosion issues) common to the wet-cell battery, and boast greater resistance to extreme temperatures, shock, and vibration. Chemically they are almost the same as wet (non-sealed) batteries except that the antimony in the lead plates is replaced by calcium, and gas recombination could take place.

Some brands reccomend that you run them in any position (Except termials down) to prevent sulfation across the main battery terminals

I did a project for Euro Disney years ago that used gel cells. Our
supplier, Power Sonic, informed us that we could use them in any
orientation that we liked. The only restriction was that we could not
charge them with the terminals down. A small amount of gas venting
that occurs. If the vents are all covered with gel, it would get
squeezed out during charging.
