Nice.  I like those TOF sensors from ST Micro where the VL53L0X is 'last years model' and now I just got some of the 4 meter versions, VL53L1X,  which are supposed to be pin compatible.

Made up an 8-way TOF hub for one of my bots where an Arduino Nano subsystem scans then my bot reads the 8 distances thus offloading the I2C scanning as well as the rather awkward logic one must deal with to setup 8 unique I2C addresses as all these devices come up with a fixed I2C addr so you must setup each one before running.

Also on mark-toys is a small tablebot called EspressoBot that has been seen at HBRC that has 3 of them pointing forward at slightly different angle for object position detection and wall detection in front.  EspressoBot is an all Esp32 based unit as well which I really love that processor.

I am not quite sure why they call their board LiDar as to me a LiDar has a great many points of high angular resolution but their board has one of the TOF sensors?  Still, it's a nice subsystem to just get and use and has the WiFi interface worked out.

I'm not sure exactly how these are "Better". More accurate, more data points maybe, but also MUCH more expensive. 

I've seen people at the HBRC Club meetings and MakerFaire demo-ing "LIDAR" systems which were basically Sharp IR rangers spinning around on a stepper motor. Which is kind of a cool hack IMO.

The reason for all the similar devices is that they all use the same
sensor chip but mounted to different PCBs.

I've ben trying tithing of a use case for this chip. I don't think
it can be a collision sensor for a robot because the beam width s so
small. You can scan the beam but the sample rate is so low it might
take several seconds per scan. The sensor would be good for process
automation to detect say when a sack of dog food is coming down and
needs to be lifted and placed on a pallet.
