What effort is it to start to make a reliable, house patrolling, beer fetching robot?

Of course one can build a robot, fetching a beer from the fridge in 200 lines of code.

But fetching a beer isn't the real goal.

If that's all you want get a drink vending machine. It won't be a robot though. It can't load itself.

I meant a roving robot fridge that stops when it sees a person and if asked, dispenses a can of beer/coke.

There was an article I think in Servo magazine about some uni students who did this. They had a small 12v fridge on wheels that they could call.
