While searching for more information on the "A Low-Cost Laser Distance
Sensor" paper I found this article that gives a few more details:

The above article mentions the 'Borg Scanner' by Morgan Quigley at
STAIR. Here is the IRCA 2009 paper describing it:

I also found the 'Robcamscan' project by Julian Ryde at CSIRO. The IRCA

That's a really cool article. Very nice summary of how the laser
scanner works and you don't need an IEEE membership to read about it.
