Sorry for the slow reply.

USB "live install"  is still not showing up. This Acer uses the UEFI bios and does not have the legacy option.
This is all the information I have. If you can help me on this one I'll buy you chocolates.

Cheers

Does the usb drive show up under Hard Disks? I've seen that happen before where the bios sees it as a normal hdd rather than a usb device.

Hi all
not sure if this group even exists anymore, anyway I have a ubuntu live install question.
Brand new Acer e1-510.
Does not display USB live install under list of bootable options.Initially USB option was present and wouldn't boot. During quiet splash screen I hit F 6 and get message I don't have hd0 permission. But now after setting password on hard drive the USB is not even listed.
A quick Web search of this laptop shows a common problem with no work around.
Assistance would be appreciated big time.

Cheers

Assuming the end-goal is have linux installed on this thing?
If so can you remove the hard drive and attach it to a 'normal' PC and install a basic linux OS.
Then chuck it back into the lappy and continue with install/updates? (yes I've had to do that before)

Also assuming it has the dreaded 'secure boot' and you cant turn that off in the UEFI, it may not like having a hard drive with linux os shoved into it and refuse to boot at all?

"Assuming the end-goal is have linux installed on this thing?" YES

Haven't had much time but downloaded Acer Legacy Bios, installed on fat32 USB and oddly enough it showed up under F2 -> boot options, albeit weird that Ubuntu USB was invisible. Will try it after work tonight, although I'm the blind man leading myself here.

Hi All

Problem solved.
Downloaded Bios v 2.07 and created bootable USB via Unetbootin, formatted as fat32, then booted from this which consequently toasted Windows 8. Under F2 boot options, changed from UEFI TO LEGACY Bios. The rest is history, now on 64bit Ubuntu 14.04.

Thanks all for your help -> Chris
