The Last Horror Film (also released as Fanatic) is a 1982 American horror comedy film directed by David Winters and starring Joe Spinell and Caroline Munro. Its plot follows a delusional middle-aged New York City taxi driver who, fixated on the idea of being a film director, visits the Cannes Film Festival where he begins stalking an actress he is obsessed with.

Upon its initial release, it won and was nominated in several film festivals dedicated to genre films. It was considered a partially lost film due to the fact that portions of its gore were excised from the original 35 mm film negatives, and largely only available on some home video editions. In 2023, a complete print of the original cut was found at the La Cinmathque Franaise, and utilized by Severin Films for a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release.

Vinny Durand, a New York City taxi driver who lives with his mother, dreams of directing a film starring horror film actress Jana Bates. He decides to attend the Cannes Film Festival, where she has been nominated for Best Actress her latest horror film Scream, as he hopes to meet her and get her to star in his film to kickstart his directing career.

Accompanying Jana at Cannes is her manager and ex-husband Bret Bates, as well as her boyfriend Alan Cunningham, who has produced the film. Durand tries to meet Jana, but is turned away, only to find out agented scripts are accepted. Shortly afterwards, Jana and Cunningham attend a press conference, where she receives a note saying, "You've made your last horror film. Goodbye." She goes to see Bret at his hotel room after and finds his decapitated corpse. When she later returns with the police, the body is gone.

In the meantime, Durand stalks Jana, covertly filming her with his camera. Marty Bernstein, Jana's agent, runs into Durand and shrugs him off. Bernstein meets with the Scream's director Stanley Kline, and his personal assistant Susan Archer, who reveal that all of them have received the same notes that Jana received. When the police are informed, they believe that Bret's disappearance is a publicity stunt. The next day, Bernstein gets a letter signed from Bret to meet him in a theater screening room. Bernstein is murdered by a cloaked figure upon arrival.

While Jana attends further press conferences, Durand visits a nightclub where he attacks a stripper after envisioning her as Jana. Later, he watches a horror film by Stanley Kline, which he finds disgusting. Later, when Durand runs into Kline outside, he yells at him telling him he should not make nasty films. The following day, the newscast announces the discovery of Bret's body. Archer tells Kline that she wants to leave, but he convinces her to stay. That evening, both of them are killed by an assailant who films their deaths.

Later that night, while Jana is showering in her hotel room, Durand sneaks in with a bottle of champagne, hoping to charm her into starring in his film. A terrified Jana orders him to leave, causing Durand to break the champagne bottle in anger and threaten her with the jagged glass. A bellboy arrives and interrupts the encounter, after which Jana flees through the hotel lobby, which guests mistake for another publicity stunt. Durand, caught off guard, stops and smiles for the onlookers, allowing Jana to escape in a car with Cunningham.

The next day, Cunningham drives Jana to a remote chteau in the French countryside where his friend Jonathan is staying. Durand follows them. That evening, he sneaks into the chteau, to be chased away by Jana's bodyguards who shoot pistols in the dark to accidentally kill Jonathan instead without realizing it.

Cunningham and Jana return to Cannes for the awards ceremony and when left alone she is subdued by Durand who takes her back to the castle to film a scene where Durand plays Dracula and Jana the victim. Suddenly, Bret shows up with another camera and a pistol, and congratulates Durand on setting everything up for him. Bret, revealed to be the killer and the mastermind behind this, says that on the day when Durand phoned him about his film proposal, he realized that he was the perfect fall guy to set up to get even with Jana for leaving him. Durand throws his cape over Bret and runs away.

Bret grabs Jana and follows Durand outside. Bret taunts him to come out. Durand turns on a motorcycle's headlights, blinding Bret, and as Jana steps aside, He grabs a chainsaw and murders Bret with it. Cunningham arrives with the police, to see Durand standing before Bret's dead body and screams.

The image falls back to reveal that the whole story is a film that Vinny filmed at the Cannes Film Festival with Jana Bates, and he is now back in New York showing it to his mother in a screening room.

Rue Morgue magazine expressed interested in the director's original vision and gave themselves the mission to restore it. They went on to ask various archivists and collectors to help with the research. Eventually, author Guillaume Le Disez located a 35 mm print of the original cut at La Cinmathque Franaise in excellent condition.[2]

A lifelong fan of all things scary and spooky, Taylor bought the rights to the Famous Monsters horror brand last year and currently has plans to create toys, films and festivals under the banner. Additionally, he's acted in horror films, and has his very own horror click, Zombie vs. Ninja, in pre-production.

Suffice to say, the guy knows his fright flicks. For the cover story of Revolver's new Fall 2023 issue, we collected fans' questions and posed them to Taylor, and die-hard Freddie Gallagher asked him to select the last horror movie that kept him up at night. It wasn't a difficult decision.

After Daniel wakes up he sifts through Argos LeGrant's journal, searching for something to save himself from the madness. What he finds is a plethora of incoherent ramblings, and a tragic tale at the end. It reveals that Argos unknowingly murdered his wife and daughter, save Ariadne, due to the Presence tricking him into thinking that they weren't actually his family, instead agents of the Presence trying to take away Ariadne. After finding out that this was not the case, Argos was drowned with grief and hung himself, as he couldn't bear the madness.

Peculiarly, there was a note at the end of the journal from a certain Berenice Prestegard, a therapist working at the Jeremy Hartwood Mental Hospital. Daniel deduces that she must have read the journal, and been the one tasked with examining young Ariadne's mental state, so he plans to go there. But this time, he wisely comes to the conclusion that he can't go alone.

Pulling up his contact list, he calls one of his companions and requests their help. They will go to the mental hospital while Daniel reads more of the journal and goes back to Ariadne's home. After agreeing upon this, both of them enact the plan.

As they explore the mental hospital, they find out that the workers were in progress of moving all of the furniture out and abandoning it, but for some reason were stopped from completing said task. The Presence impeded their progress, and eventually snuffed out their life like the rest of the fallen.

While searching for a way to stop the curse, they find notes, films, and more from Berenice detailing her findings in the Ariadne investigation and the Music box investigation. She goes into detail about young Ariadne's mental state, and how she is extremely closed off from people. A film reveals that somehow Ariadne knew what she would look like in the future, and that she would meet Daniel. She even knew his appearance.

At young Ariadne's request, Berenice goes to former home of the LeGrants and sleeps there for a night. Placing candles all around the room and the mattress she laid out to light the place and try to calm her nerves. After falling asleep she has a dream where she explores an unfamiliar environment featuring a painting of a hanging Argos, a bloody-eyed head statue of Berenice, and a painting of Berenice at her desk with the music box in front of her. When she leaves the room, she somehow ends up in the same room again but with differing items such as a painting of Isaac Frber at his desk with the music box and a picture of him hanging. Yet the statue of Berenice remains. The final room features a painting of old Ariadne with the music box, Daniel with the music box, and once again the statue of Berenice. Eventually she is scared awake by a nightmarish version of herself.

In the second recording Berenice details another dream that she had at the LeGrant's. In the dream she explores a twisted version of the mental hospital, filled with rust, poison, and death. Different versions of herself beg her to continue going down, to continue figuring out what is going on with the cursed music box. One version even takes her dream catcher. She is attacked, but does not die. Instead she is put into a room with "ONLY ONE WAY OUT" where the door should be. As the lights flicker on and off, different methods of ending her life appear on the table, and eventually she drinks a bottle of poison. But she wakes up.

In the third and final recording Berenice figures out how to stop the horror, you have to return the music box to the Presence. As she wakes up she begins to get hopeful, as she just has to find a way to return the music box, but her words begin to slow, signaling that she either drifted off or she died.

The companion contacts Daniel on their phone, telling him of what Berenice said would stop the curse once and for all. He travels to Ariadne's home and asks her where the music box is, to which she informs him is upstairs, and he grabs it and puts himself into "There". Daniel experiences the different nightmares that both Sebastian P. Husher and Isaac faced when they were alive. Husher's dream reveals how Masha, Julia, Saul, and Catherine all died. Masha was locked in her room and was killed, Julia got trapped behind the impossible door, and Catherine and Saul hid in his room until the Presence entered, to which Catherine comforted her child and said their goodbyes before the Presence murdered them.
