Isanybody else having a probelm pairing an Apple Pencil. I insert it into my new 2gen iPad Pro 12.9 and it briefly shows the dialog to Pair and then shows it connected, but then disconnects, and then I get an Error that the Pencil took to long to pair. Then it doesn't work.

After one year i tried to use my pencil again and i have the same kind of problem. First i got messages there wa sonly 3% battery left. Charging didn't helped. I tried a reset of the ipad pro even a hard reset, nothing helped. I went to the apple store and they couldn't help, they don't know if there is a problem and the warranty was expended.(14 months, pffffff ) Back home i tried to charge the pencil true USB with the adaptor and after 15 tries of plugging it in and out of the ipad suddenly i got connected for 7 seconds, then disconnected again, and then connected again for a few seconds. Because of the short period of connection i could see that the battery of the pencil was at 100 % again but still it can't keep the connection. The icon of bluetooth at the top of the ipad is blinking all the time. After awhile the same problem of the beginning had came back and I get an Error that the Pencil took to long to pair. And again the same pairing problem came back. Ipad sees the pencil but it can't pair with it. Its a brand new pencil i only used it once when i bought it and left in the box for over a year. So it must be a hardware problem, so apple fix it please.

i'm having the same exact issues. Trek all the solutions other posters have noted with no success. However I can pair a $19 Wacom stylus with no problem While the $99 Apple Pencil is virtually useless until Apple does something.

I am not having the same problems, what I am having is the Apple Pencil Losing paring. I have my pencil is never less than 2 meters from the my iPad Pro 10.5, I am on iOS 11.0.3. Everyday I have to plug the pencil into the port so it pair. This didn't happen in iOS 10.x

My friend had an apple pen that was never opened. sadly he passed away, but I just opened it now as i mispalced my own one and connected it to my Ipad. the Pair option comes up and goes really fast. If i do manage to press Pair, it says the Pen is connected but immediatly say Not Connected. I have done all the software updates on my Ipad but still the same issue....Please help.

It is amazing! I didn't use a hairdryer but instead placed the pencil on my stomach that was very warm for no more than 30 seconds, attached it to my iPad and voila it started to work. No idea what's going on there but thank you everyone on this forum!

Confirming the hair dryer worked on a 1st gen Apple Pencil paired with 6th gen iPad. Hadn't used the pencil in close to a year and was having pairing issues. Held it under the hairdryer and boom - works perfectly again.

Apple Support went through all of this. Two brand new iPad 10th Gen's and tried an old and a brand new Pencil 1st Gen (which is supposed to be supported). It does not pair. I should add that the Pencil does still pair with my iPad 8th Gen so the Pencil does work.

This worked great!! Must add that of you have your 1st Gen Pencil connected to any other device you MUST go to the old device/settings/Bluetooth and "Forget Device" for the Pencil. Then follow the directions in video link. Thank you!!

I have spent days and hours with this issue, and with a 10th gen iPad and a first-generation pencil with no results with Apple support. I even received a return swap of the iPad with the same issue. My calls and trouble shooting started on February 7th and ended today 02/17/2024. The result: You are just going to have to wait until it's fixed with a software update and with no known date. I was also informed that Apple will not reach out to me if a solution is found, I just need to keep doing updates. Both iPads came out of the box defective. I purchased Apple extended care which they say does not cover the issue because it's a software issue on their part and not a manufacturing defect. Buyer beware.

You have to "Forget Device" on ALL previously connected devices to the pencil. Mine did the same thing until I went into the settings of the old iPad and removed the pencil from Bluetooth connection. Once you remove it from all other devices, restart the new iPad then connect with LightBlue instructions again. Your pairing number will be 1234

I'll confess: part of my decision to purchase my 4th-gen iPad Air over a much-needed new laptop was due to its compatibility with the Apple Pencil. With my preference for handwritten notes and reminders and Apple's seamless calendar integration, I was beyond excited for the stylus to be my literal right-hand tool as I penciled in my plans for the New Year.

But writing with the Apple Pencil is one thing, and pairing it to your iPad is another. In fact, with there now being two generations of Apple Pencils and a few too many iPad models, you'll want to make sure you're buying a compatible duo first and then know the deets for how to connect them together afterward.

Note: If you have a 10th Gen iPad with USB-C, the first-generation Apple Pencil is still compatible, but you will have to use a USB-C to lightning adapter and USB-C to USB-C charging cord to pair and charge.

For the 2nd-Gen Apple Pencil, start by making sure your iPad's Bluetooth is turned on. You can find it by going to your settings and then Bluetooth. This can also be done by swiping down on the upper-right corner of the home screen and tapping the Bluetooth quick toggle.

The same procedure goes for charging. As long as your 2nd Gen Pencil is clipped onto the iPad's right side magnetic strip -- and your iPad has enough battery to distribute, of course -- your Apple Pencil will automatically charge.

Make sure your Bluetooth is turned on in your iPad's settings, then connect the pencil to the right side of the iPad's magnetic connector strip. From there, your iPad should recognize your Apple Pencil.

Besides compatibility, the differences between the 1st and 2nd-gen Apple Pencils come down to feel and functionality. The 2nd-gen Apple Pencil feels and writes more like a regular pencil, with flattened edges on the side to enhance the grip while serving as a touchpoint for controls. The 1st-gen Apple pencil is more rounded and comes with a removable cap for Lightning connectivity.

You can't pair an Apple Pencil with an iPhone, they only work with iPads (and don't need a PIN to pair them. The first model of the Pencil actually pairs by having it plug into the iPad so the pairing isn't even bluetooth-based)

Another aspect is compatibility. There are two generations of Apple Pencil and both are compatible with different iPad models. Using an Apple Pencil with an incompatible model could be the reason behind Apple Pencil not connecting to your iPad.

Pairing the Apple Pencil (2nd Gen) is as easy as bringing the Pencil close to the long edge of the iPad. The magnetic connectors attach the Pencil to the iPad and the Pencil gets paired automatically. While in this position, the iPad also charges the Pencil.

To restart the iPad, go to Settings > General > Shut Down and when the slider appears, drag to shut down the iPad. After a few seconds, use the Power button to restart the iPad. If, however, this feels too much tapping, here is the old-fashioned way:

Your Apple Pencil connects to the iPad via Bluetooth. If you find your Apple Pencil not connecting to iPad, it could be because Bluetooth is Off or just stuck somehow, and you might need to toggle it.

More often than we care to admit, unpairing a Bluetooth device and re-pairing it is all it takes to get issues fixed. So, if your Apple Pencil is not connecting to iPad, it could be a pairing issue, and a way out is to unpair and re-pair the Pencil.

Resetting all settings on the iPad is helpful to restore all settings on your iPad to their factory default. This means that it should technically remove any and all conflicts occurring anywhere that might be causing the "Apple Pencil not connecting" problem.

Now, you have tried nearly everything, even resetting all settings, and still have a problem with Apple Pencil not connecting to the iPad. There was an option to erase all settings and content but I did not try that, because I did not want to lose my data. Is there a way to repair iPadOS to fix Apple Pencil not connecting issue without deleting iPad data? Yes, there is!
