The City of Raleigh has 117 miles of greenway trails. In order to maintain high-quality greenway trails for our citizens, the system needs regular maintenance and care. That care sometimes results in closures and/or detours. The below sections provide an up-to-date picture of where repairs, detours, and closures are happening on the greenway to provide you with the best greenway trail experience possible.

The Phase 1 greenway closure of the Neuse River Trail between Anderson Point Park and just south of Milburnie Park is currently in place. This closure began in Nov. of 2022 and is anticipated to remain in place until late spring of 2024. The Phase 2 closure, in addition to the Phase 1 closure, begins just south of Milburnie Park, and will extend to the Hedingham neighborhood. The Phase 2 closure will begin on Nov. 6, 2023, and continue until Dec. 30, 2024. In the absence of continuous adjacent bicycle and pedestrian facilities that can accommodate all user types, a detour is not feasible during the Phase 2 closure. View Closure Map.

We have been sequentially and intentionally working to enhance the bike route over the past week. Our first step after the bridge closure was to clear windstorm debris, manufacture and install detour route signs, and review the asphalt condition to see if spot improvements were needed.

No Parking signs were placed on Friday, alerting businesses to expect a change. Since then, we have worked to secure the equipment to install the detour, including 1,700 traffic cones, and manufacturing additional signs. Starting Wednesday, you will see us working in the curb lanes.

Future Detour Planning. Creating this temporary bike lane detour will help us to be more agile and able to consider similar detours during planned low bridge closures and at other locations.

One lane of Route 151 between the Algonquin Avenue and Job's Fishing Road will be closed 4/17 - 4/26 from 7 am - 5 pm for road work. Eastbound thru traffic on Route 151 will be detoured at Currier Road in Falmouth to Old Barnstable Road. Westbound traffic will continue on Route 151.

On May 4, 2018, there was a landslide on a cliff overlooking Shoal Creek just south of the park parking lot on Shoal Creek Boulevard and north of 24th street. The debris from the landslide took out a portion of the greenbelt trail and a section of a wastewater line located under the trail. The area affected has been closed for public safety. The slope has stabilized but is not in a condition that supports public access. The trail has been detoured to the sidewalk along Lamar and connects to the west bank trail at the limestone stairs crossing the creek, south of the slope failure and north of Shoal Creek Blvd. The Parks Department is working on a plan to replace and widen the sidewalk to a 12' width in this area to replace the damaged west side trail and accommodate the additional recreational use. Construction on the improved east side trail is anticipated for the Fall of 2023. District 9

The Shoal Creek Greenbelt on the west side of the creek within the failure area remains closed to public access. The Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) has been working with Public Works, Austin Transportation, Shoal Creek Conservancy, and Pease Park Conservancy to develop improvements to the current trail detour, and sidewalk along Lamar Blvd. to benefit public and recreational use. The first phase proposed was to improve and formalize a nature trail that connects walkers to the closest creek crossing. Installation of the nature trail was completed in the spring of 2021. PARD has also completed a design to replace and widen the Lamar sidewalk to a 12' width through the detour area to accommodate the additional recreation users. The new trail will be located further back from the road and closer to mature shade trees. Widening the sidewalk is supported in the adopted Urban Trails and Bicycle Plans. PARD has received permit approval for the enhanced trail detour and is currently working with Austin Energy to remove guy wires that conflict with the new alignment.
