Chandi Parayanam Procedure

InChandi sadhana parayana or the recital of the text is considered more important than the japa of any mantra. Though the navakshari mantra is chanted, it is chanted as an integral part of the recital of the text. Traditionally the entire text of thirteen chapters is recited in Sanskrit. There is an obligatory prelude (purvabhaga) as well as a postlude (uttara bhaga) to the central text of thirteen chapters. The navakshari mantra is also an integral part of Chandi parayanam. Traditionally recitation of the Chandi is a serious and complete sadhana in itself and requires initiation from a Guru.

Most people are content with chanting selected slokas of the text or chanting the Durga Saptashloki (seven verses) which contains the essence of Chandi, apart from a devout reading of the myth in a language that they are familiar with. Chanting selected slokas for specific results is a practice that is quite common.

Swami Sachchidananda who had initiated me in Chandi parayana had instructed me to prescribe certain slokas as remedies for problems. Accordingly I have been prescribing the chanting of certain slokas as remedies since the last ten years or so.

Any of the above methods can be adopted in reciting The Chandi. Those who are not initiated but still wish to benefit from Chandi sadhana can follow the same procedure except that they may read the translated story in English or any other language as a spiritual practice. Even the myth itself is very powerful and therapeutic. Those who are not initiated can devoutly read the myth and chant The Saptashloki. The Goddess will shower Her grace on those who do this with faith. Those who wish to do complete parayana of Chandi can pray to The Goddess as it is only Her Grace that can lead them to an accomplished Guru who can initiate them into a full-fledged parayana.

Sri Sri Chandi should be read with firm faith, devotion and correct pronunciation. Tuesday, Friday and Saturday are auspicious week days for the reading of Sri Sri Chandi. The 8th day (Ashtami), 9th day (Navami) and 14th day (Chaturdasi) are the best lunar days for reciting the text. The nine days of Durga puja during Autumnal equinox (Sharad Navaratri) and Spring equinox (Vasanta Navaratri) are very auspicious times of the year. Those who cannot do regular parayana can read The Chandi at least on selected auspicious weekdays, lunar days or the Nine nights.

Regardless of upasana maargam or regular parayanam, please start your parayanam by listening to the MAHA SANKALPAM AUDIO just once at the very beginning. Then please repeat your individual sankalpam for loka kshemam by following the acharya in the individual sankalpam audio, INDIVIDUAL SANKALPAM AUDIO. You chant the individual sankalpam audio at the beginning of your upasana or on a daily basis. it will take you 2 minutes to do this individual sankalpam. Then, chant Lalitha Sahasranamam. Offer naivedyam to Devi after finishing your daily parayanam.

After maha naivedyam has been offered, please do Bala puja, Suvasini puja and Brahmana puja the next day or day after. All 3 pujas must be done on the same day, if possible. Your temple priest or your family elders can help you do these 3 pujas or explain the procedure. Chandi Homam is a powerful homam performed to enjoy good health and happy family life. Chandi Homam is done to appease and seek blessings of Goddess Durga. The name Chandi is the other name of Goddess Durga as mentioned in Devi Mahatyam.

The Goddess is considered as the Mother of the Universe and an embodiment of feminine power and energy. She is also believed to be the creator of the Holy Trinity of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva.

The 9 days of Navratri are auspicious for performing Chandi Homam. Also, auspicious days like Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdasi, Magha Amavasya, Jyeshta Amavasya, Chaithra and Karthik Pournami are good for performing the Homam. It is preferred to perform the Homam during daytime and finish the rituals before sunset.

Chandi Homam is an extremely elaborate Homam and is usually performed by several priests together in front of a large Homa Kunda. The Homam can be performed in all major Temples dedicated to Goddess Durga or Parvati like Sri Durga Parameshwari Temple in Mangalore, Sri Mookambika Temple at Mookambika, Chamundeshwari Temple at Mysuru, and the Mahalakshmi Temple in Mumbai.

Dear sir, i have been suggested to perform chandi homam at home. We reside in hyderabad. Please suggest me the best person who will perform this puja and best time for it to be performed. I have lost my two younger brothers and my parents. My house in Patna is abandoned because it is now under my cousins boundary.Also in my career after every 6 years or so something happens and I loose my job and quite a lot of money is lost. i read about chandi homam.but i heared from one of the priest that requirements will be nuts like,badham,pista in enormous level,also we have to be follow half day fasting for 48 days before do homam.please clarify doubts

Chandi Homam can be performed in home if sufficient space exists. Otherwise in any temple. There is two types of chandi homam. 1) if performed in home for the purpose of a particular cause it is called Chandi homam 2) if performed for the sake of public at large and it shall be performed in Temple and is called Chandi yagam. There is no restrictions one should a strong will and wish can perform with the help of priests.

Nav Chandi Homam is a very elaborate and expensive procedure. It requires very experienced priests. The price varies based on location but it is usually around 50-70 thousand. You can perform it in Sharadamba Temple.

What CARE should be taken while performing Shata Chandi homam ?

I have heard it is very difficult to perform and one should not commit even a smallest mistake.

The priests will know all the procedures. Just make sure that some of the priests are experienced and have done the ritual before. It is preferred to perform the Homam during daytime and finish the rituals before sunset.
