I've seen a couple of threads about this, but those are all quite old, in the 2011/12 area, so I'm wondering if there is any "proper" way to pronounce it nowadays. I remember the old site saying that it's pronounced "hex", but sometimes I feel uncomfortable with that due to it possibly being confused with hexadecimal (especially when mentioning it to people who aren't very programming-savvy). Therefore I also pronounce it "haksee" a lot, however this doesn't seem very right.

I understand that it doesn't really matter, but I am curious whether there is an "officially correct" way, a general way that's used most commonly, or just the "best" way to pronounce it.

Hello,

Haxe is pronounced like "hax" or "hex" as far as I'm aware. But when in doubt, check out the talks uploaded by the Silex Labs YouTube channel and hear how the presenters pronounce it.

The right pronounce us Ax, because there is no physiological way a french can pronounce the English H.

Just an FYI, this topic is relentlessly confusing because I'm pretty sure French and English speakers pronounce words like "hecks" and "hacks" differently, so even spelling it out like that doesn't always clarify the situation. :)

Axe
Hecks
Hexsee
etc....

All seem to be in use at the conferences.

I always considered it a preference/accent/nationality related, but in a
way I like to think that this represents the multi-target and
multi-national aspects of Haxe, it's really the logo that really defines
Haxe's identity more than the way you proununce it's name, but it is
common to miss the last 'E' due to the French origin, but living in
England I add it back like you seem to :), and then get corrected by a
friend who forgets that every other person has a different way to say it
anyway.

For instance I live in Bath and depending where in the country someone
lives the way they say it sounds quite different, obviously they should
say it quite posh with a a deep "R", but often they seem to have sneaked
an "f" at the end and forgotten the 't', or... So you should probably
try to say Haxe with a silent last "E" so 'Haxsee' is not very French
but beyond that not sure it matters, just think of the orange positive
color that is so tied to Haxe.

Hax, where a is something between a and e.

I propose that Nicholas records a sound clip such as the one from Linus Torvald saying "I'm Nicholas Cannasse and I pronnounce Haxe as Haxe" :D

Yes, there was a long discussion :)

English speakers naturally want to say "Hacks", "H" + "Axe"

I usually hear French speakers say the same, just with a silent "H", so closer to "Axe" (occasionally with a long E sound, "Axe" + "EE")

If everyone is saying what comes naturally, it often sounds similar

"hex" is pronounced similarly to "hacks" for a French speaker I think, which has created confusion
