Hey everyone!

Lars here, I'm the developer of Defender's Quest. Those of you who follow me know I've been working for some time to build out console compatibility for Haxe, with the Lime/OpenFL/HaxeFlixel stack specifically in mind (since that's what I use).

I recently had a *very* productive chat with certain powers-that-be in the world of major next-gen consoles (both handheld/home console) that are interested in making it easier for devs to get onto their systems, and I've been pitching them on Haxe/OpenFL. Joshua Granick and I have been working with on building this tech just on our own, and so far we've made decent progress with one console target, but this recent development has the potential to pour a bit of rocket fuel on the operation. For that to happen though, the powers-that-be would like to see a list of interested developers who might benefit from having this pipeline available. The more the merrier.

Obviously this is most relevant for OpenFL developers, but it could also open the door for Haxe development in general, whether they're using Lime, OpenFL, NME, Flambe, or whatever.

So if you're a Haxe game developer and you'd like to submit your name for my list, please reply with your name(s) and game(s). (Developer names preferred but I'll take individuals too). Obviously, releasable games are awesome but we're interested in basically everyone of all shapes and sizes who could use this. Now, submitting your name is *NOT* a commitment, it's just a statement of interest, specifically: "Yes, I would be very interested in this technology if it were available under the right terms and circumstances."

Any takers?

Hello Lars,

It would be awesome for haxeflixel to be able to target consoles.
And yes I am very interested to release games on consoles, but as far as I know Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo just don't let you in. Only after you developent a well known game(like yours:P), you can discuss with them.
So my name Mihai Morosanu developer name "paala" , and a WIP HeroQuest- Name of the game is subject to change.

Thanks Lars!

I'm porting  game from as3 flixel to haxeflixel because I want to be able to target consoles in the future. My "company" name is Tembac and the name of the game in WIP is Platform Rider.

Right now I'm using haxeflixel to make small games for mobile platforms with my other company Chimango Games: https://www.facebook.com/chimangogames?fref=ts

Oh, yea, interested here, been working on this super atmospheric platformer for a while and, while a small child of it which is going to be released as a SWF, the big project will target desktop and would be cool to have it on consoles.

Pic here

As for the company thing, you can check it here: www.youtube.com/user/SETENTIAstudios, as for developer, myself: www.claudioficara.com.ar (kinda outdated tho)
As for a soon to be released haxeflixel game, you have this one: http://www.indiedb.com/games/totos-little-party (i don't want that on console, not suitable)

Cheers!

Hey Lars, I may be too late to get on the list, but I'd be very interested. Working on a minimalist puzzle game called LOVE, and have an old prototype vs. type game called BounceHaus (involves lederhosen and a bouncy castle) that would be fun to finish and put on consoles.

Name is Christian Coler, develop under the name Tachyon Burst, and website is tachyonburstmedia.com (although it is currently down due to me moving :( server is still in a box somewhere)

Hi Lars!
I hope its not too late to get in on this.  I'm currently working on a game using HaxeFlixel and, when the time comes, I'd love to be able to port it to consoles.
My name is Sean Whiteman and I've been programming for a while now.  I have apps on the app store built with Obj-C including one that made the number one rank for the Sports category at the time (Ultimate Football Pool).  However I'd like to port a future game, nothing out today.
I'm a small one-person team, hoping to become incorporated soon.
Website is down currently as I accidentally wiped the server clean with a fresh Linux distro.
Thanks!
Sean Whiteman

Yes, this is going somewhere.

The process is admittedly a bit slow, but we've submitted the big list of names to our interested console partners and wheels are slowly churning.

Meanwhile Josh and I are slowly working on building out our first proof of concept target on the dev kits we already have access to.

Hey there!

So I'm bound a little bit by some NDA's, but I can say we are definitely making progress with this and hopefully I can announce something publicly soonish-but-not-immediately. The good news is we seem to have gotten enough interest to get this off the ground and progress is under way, but if anyone wants to help more directly than waiting to see what happens, please don't hesitate to get in contact with me off-list (email me at lars dot doucet at gmail dot com).

We're interested as well. I'm Kyatt, posting on behalf of Sugar Rockets. We've been trying to get onto consoles for a while now, and this sounds like the perfect opportunity!

Our released games (Beeserker: The Videogame! and Scienceman Twins) were made in AS3 Flixel, but I'm porting the latter to HaxeFlixel, and we have 2 or 3 other HaxeFlixel projects coming down the pipeline that I should be able to talk about in further detail soon.

Very exciting! Thanks for sharing details on all the slides.

This is now, and will in the foreseeable future, only be available to licensed developers for those consoles, correct?

In other words, there's no way around needing to be a licensed WiiU developer to get your HaxeFlixel game on WiiU. You still need to do that, although you could technically build it using the wfEngine PC target to test if it works...

Is that right? Is it (marginally?) valuable to have developers who only do that?

The "console-pc" target is kind of like running an android emulator on your PC to test android development (of course console-pc is not an emulator, it's a native PC target using the console stack).
And yes, there's basically no way to get your games onto a console without having permission from that console owner. Unity devs also have to get that per-console permission first.

That said, a lot of the console owners are moving to a "two-tiered" developer system with one path geared towards indies, with less paperwork and cost, and the other geared towards traditional AAA. So far the "indie" tier is basically for indie devs using Unity.

Now, no promises, but we'll be making the case that Haxe/OpenFL would be the perfect thing to add to that entry-level console tier, and would give some competition to Unity, so it'd be more developers for them and more leverage in their negotiations against the growing Unity monopoly.

That's the pitch I'll be making to them, at least. Nothing's agreed to yet.

Releasing your game for a console without testing it on that console is a recipe for disaster :)

I'm not a licensed developer on any console. I don't mind spending some time to build and run my games against the console-pc target, as long as that will help in some way -- whether it's validating the API/functionality, the haxe/console interaction, or providing additional "test cases".

Is it valuable to do so?

Ah, I see. Yeah, console-pc is a different target and even though it's not a representative test of how the application runs on actual hardware console, it is a better test of the console stack than plain vanilla openfl. At the very least it could expose some bugs in the software stack that need to be fixed on all console targets.

Hello!

Just chiming in here as well. We are www.glitchypixel.com.co. We have access to PS4 and PSVita devkits and we have developed and published previously with Unity3D. However, we are interested in developing with Haxe and OpenFL.
We are right now making a new game in HaxeFlixel, so although I can eventually port it to Unity if the case is needed, we would love to have native exports on PS4/PSVita.

Cheers, hopefully you have been able to make a good case lately for Haxe/OpenFL/HaxeFlixel :).
