Urgent: Heartbreaking Owl Rescue at Lake Temescal—We Need Change Today at Lake Temescal, a local Great Horned Owl was found fighting for her life. She was severely tangled in fishing line, suspended by her wing at the top of a very tall redwood tree. For nearly four hours, she struggled to free herself. The fire department dispatched a truck, but they were unable to reach her. Animal Control is not equipped for such a rescue, and neither are any of the local wildlife non profits. After several calls, an arborist was located who was willing to climb up the tree, contain her, and cut the line that had her tethered to the tree. He then carried her down to the ground, contained safely in a net. She was transported to Lindsay Wildlife Hospital for treatment, but her outcome is still unknown. Staff at Lindsay cut off monofilament fishing line wrapped around her feathers and legs. This isn't an isolated incident. Lake Temescal is notorious for fishing-related injuries to our local wildlife. It’s heartbreaking that while East Bay Parks (EBRPD) continues to allow fishing here, the burden of rescue and the cost of medical care falls entirely on the public and non-profits. Beyond the wildlife, our pets are also at risk from discarded hooks and line. The solution is simple: Lake Temescal should be a sanctuary, not a fishing hole. It’s time to stop allowing fishing here so our wildlife can live without suffering needless injury and death. I believe this was the same film they were showing at the Winged Migration event yesterday at Mare Island.  It really was horrifying to watch the poor owl hanging from the tree.  Thanks to the brave gal that climbed that tree and saved her, she will hopefully survive.
