Hi All,
The unofficial Mon 1 team was graced by clear (and warm) skies, welcome support from several other unofficial teams (both hawkwatch and banding) and abundant raptors.
We started the official unofficial count at 9:45am, as already, the Sharp-shinned Hawks were coming in quite close. The Broad-winged Hawks joined the migration party soon after, and the raptor flow, and heat, ramped up steadily from there, buteos and accipiters circling the hill and assembling in kettles to the east, the temperature eventually topping out at 89.5 degree during our fourth hour.
A great, beautiful day on the hill, with many highlights: One-hundred and ten Broad-winged Hawks, including a great view of Dark Morph! Plus an early-in-the-day Merlin and a last-hour Juvenile Peregrine with places to be, the first White-tailed Kite of the season. And when the hawks weren’t filling the skies, the Vaux Swift were!
While unofficial, it was truly a team effort, the many extra eyes (and supply of water!) both needed and greatly appreciated. We also had many visitors from the greater birding community, including a High School birding class.
