An Invisible Threat to Wildlife A rare patient arrived at our wildlife hospital recently: a juvenile Northern Goshawk, a powerful forest raptor not often seen in the Bay Area. In fact, since 1995, we have treated only two other goshawks. This young bird was brought to us after striking a residential window in Pleasant Hill. Window strikes may seem surprising, but they are one of the most common and deadly threats birds face, impacting hundreds of species each year. Birds do not recognize glass as a barrier and instead mistake reflections of sky and trees for open habitat, often with devastating consequences. This goshawk suffered injuries from the collision and is now receiving specialized care from our hospital team. The good news is that window strikes are preventable. Simple actions like adding bird safe window decals, reducing nighttime lighting, and placing feeders thoughtfully can save lives. Every patient we treat tells a larger conservation story. This goshawk’s journey is a reminder that small changes we make at home can make a life saving difference for wildlife right outside our windows. For the first few paragraphs of the article, I was thinking that the Goshawk was the aforementioned “invisible threat to wildlife”. The first paragraph even says it is “not often seen”.
