All,

TI is aware of the instability problems that many customers are
experiencing with the current HawkBoard and is working actively to
solve the problem. Unfortunately, the current HawkBoard does not
follow TI’s recommended layout recommendations. Even after trying
Innovate Solutions’ proposed solution, the boards in our possession
are still exhibiting problems

We want to make sure our customers’ designs are the best they can be,
so unfortunately, we just can’t recommend the current HawkBoard
because of these design instabilities. We do not recommend new
customers order the current HawkBoard.

TI is currently doing a root cause analysis. We hope to update the
community with a new HawkBoard design that is TI recommended and
supports the earlier HawkBoard software. We hope to engage a new
manufacturer for this new HawkBoard in the near future.
TI has many customers that are in production with OMAP-L138 and the
AM1808 processors. Also, just a friendly reminder that we always
advise our customers to follow our design specs and to remember that
we also offer schematic reviews for your convenience.

For the time being, for a known good design, we suggest starting with
our recommended development platform, the LogicPD Experimenter/EVM:
http://www.logicpd.com/products/development-kits/zoom-omap-l138-experimenter-kit.
Although the LogicPD board does not support DDR2, we have used a
separate vendor to prove the use of DDR2 on the AM1808 and the OMAP-
L138. Although not officially recommended as the development platform
of choice, and not open for order entry, we do refer customers to the
schematics found here: http://support.spectrumdigital.com/boards/evmam1808/revb/
for a known good DDR2 layout.

Please do not hesitate to contact me directly so that I may help you
get the necessary support to continue your project.

Best Regards,

Huy Pham

Even myself & many of my friends are waiting for hawkboards.

TI is pleased to announce that we are working with long-time community participant Special Computing on a OMAP-L138 board with a TI recommended design. Special Computing is soliciting feature requests from the community, so please feed them to Bill Mar at Special Computing (copied) directly.

We are hoping to have our first boards out in Mid March.

Do broken-Hawkboard owners get free replacement boards?

Bill, right now, we suggest that Hawkboard customers from Innovate work directly with Innovate for refunds/returns.

TI is working on a promotion for broken-Hawkboard owners, but we cannot confirm or commit at this time.

I came across an interesting problem regarding the old hawkboard
design files. I would like to request that the new design incorporate
the following:

The memory on the board to physically swappable for a single chip of
Micron DDR2 ram chip. While the Micron 128M and 256M chips (MT47H64M16
and MT47H128M16) are "pin compatible" their form-factor is different
by 1mm. The 256M chip is bigger. Would it be possible for you to
layout the hawk-board to support both chip sizes so that an upgrade
would be simple to do form 128 to 256? Also, one of the things that
really attracted me to the current hawkboard design is its current 6
layer design, verses the EVM board which is 12 layers. I hope the new
hawkboard design sticks to 6 layers.

I'll email above messages to info@specialcomp too.

Hi Huy,

I'm in Vietnam. The shipping to/from US cost more than haft of the board.
So, I prefer a promotion plan if any. Keep looking

  1. The TLV320AIC3107 seems to be wasted with only line1 L+R brought out. Ideally it should be replaced with a device having a 5.1 or higher output. If TLV320AIC3107 must be used get all the inputs to a header.
  2. Could the VGA female be moved to the edge holding USB / ethernet / dc jack. It would enable a more ergonomic and simple housing with a back plate.
  3. Where ever the I/o connectors cant be aligned with the "rear", I would suggest a header.
  4. Could the TPs be populated with real test pins.
  5. Reset switch: replace it with one of better quality. Mine is damaged.
  6. SD should be replaced with microsd. I doubt one would be able to buy an SD card.

I did not follow up this thread for months.. I purchased a hawkboard and then I realised it was buggy as read from forum threads. Anyone aware of the replacements from innovative?

Shall i just throw it away or it is of some use?

I wonder why the issue on Hawk Board is still not resolved. I didn't
find any updates from Innovate regarding the refund / replacement of
Hawk Board. It is better to withdraw Hawk Board from the market rather
than making the customers suffer. We expect Innovate to do the
needful, pulling back the buggy Hawks from the market rather than
making their valuable customers suffer.

Friends,

I know many of you are still struggling with the Hawk Board. As I have
said in the past, TI does not recommend use of the Hawk Board and have
repeatedly asked Innovate to fix the issues and to pull the product
from the market until it is resolved.

At TI, we are working our hardest to come up with a solution for our
customers. We have been working with Circuit Co, the makers of the
popular Beagle Board, on a new C6748/OMAP-L138 Development Kit that
will retail for about $150, complete with a TI software load. We
anticipate our first boards will come in October, with mass production
to begin in January. The board will be routed in 6 layers and will be
a suggested reference design for our customers.

We will share more details about the board as the mass production date
approaches. Although the Hawk Board was not a TI product, we will do
our best to do something special for disgruntled Hawk Board customers.

best regards,

Huy Pham

At last some light inside a silent dark cave. Maybe we can actually keep the junk board in the hope of a worthwhile offer from TI.

Meanwhile boards using AMD hudson  (for the high end) and the Mini 6410 using Samsung Samsung S3C6410A have long taken my business.

This has been amongst the worst handling of a design failure I have ever come across in 27 years, and I have seen some pretty bad ones.

Special Computing have completed, and are in the midst of, many
OMAP-L138 products for its customers. It was in the process of
releasing some of these designs to the public, but has been
overwhelmed with customer projects.
