People have been calling a lot today about low flying helicopters. Here is the info I have. Pass it on please.
To report an annoying helicopter call the FAA at 935-4658
Try to get a tail number and description.
I confirmed with the FAA that the helicopters over the last three days are Federal DEA funded.
If you want to complain about other helicopters being re-routed over your property because of DEA helicopters, call the same number.

Here is a video link that explains some FAA laws. http://cbs5.com/goodquestion/helicopter.pilots.fly.2.1456825.html

Happy Helicopter Watching!

If you want to have your say about over-flights, here's your chance: http://www.nps.gov/havo/parkmgmt/havo_planning_atmp2011.htm

It seems some of the helicopters that fly over HA are "quiet". Anyone
notice the difference?

"...Blue Hawaiian, which also flies the quiet copters at Hawaii
Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, uses them to lessen the
impacts to the parks as well as any neighbors."

I like the helicopters - every morning at exactly 8am Blue hawaiian
flies one sometimes 2 on the trip from kona to hilo.Like clockwork,i
know it is 8am.
As for the DEA,they are just doing their job.Small planes also.
At least at night they do not generally fly, except for the fixed
winged ones that are being ferried ( flown ) to au with extra heavy
fuel loads as they labour to gain altitude to get over the rift.
A few years back when no jet grade fuel was available on island, the
tours ceased for a few weeks. On rainy days no more treetop level
cowboy pilots due to the 1500ft stand off distance enacted by FAA over
populated areas and farms.
A decade or 2 or 3 ago one of the planes that was loaded with extra
fuel in the tanks crashed n burned i think between 2rd and 3 rd and
closer to F than E.

Do you remember that Russ ?

Perhaps to gain income and to ward off the ever increasing flights
over hawaiian acre airspace we could charge a toll of 10 dollars a
flight on every tourist flown over our homes,i betcha that in itself
would eliminate 99 percent of the flights right there and garner
national or state wide attention to our plight of no funds for roads
or HACA water tank / building upkeep.

That plane crash was in 1982. I moved here full time in 83, which was just after the Great Fire that burnt the same area.  It was carrying extra fuel to make it to Australia. The crash site was on the mauka side of road 2, almost to Sheldon's.
There were actually 2 planes. The 2nd one circled my brothers house to wake him up, just after daybreak.
I notice the email address is PS's. Is there an alias thing going on?                                                                     Russ

Thanks for confirming the time of the big fire. I thought it was '83 and
not '93. I was living in Hilo in '93 and I thought I would have known.

Aloha Maren,
I set foot on my 1979 purchased lot for the first time in Oct. of 83, 6 months after the fire. It was a blackened wasteland. I've never actually known the acreage count for that fire. I believe it was over 5K.
That fire was after a 6 month drought. I hope to never see such a drought here. But then, the iminent and eventual lava flow in this direction would be a beautiful thing, but much more devastating. Maybe it won't be in our lifetimes.
