Aloha all,
Sad news about this recently identified ohi'a disease call "Ohia Wilt" or "Rapid Ohi'a Death."  It appears to be present in Hawaiian Acres.

You can refer to the map at the following website to see where those confirmed cases are. on the island of Hawai'i  Also, understand that not all cases have been reported, so it could be more widespread than indicated on the map.

http://www2.ctahr.hawaii.edu/forestry/disease/ohia_wilt.html

If you suspect that you might have some trees affected by this disease, the following website tells you how to get a sample tested.  At this time, there is no known treatment for this disease.

If you have identified infected trees or suspect there are trees infected on your property, please try to take measures to keep it from spreading to healthy trees in your area.

Mahalo.

Aloha
We have the infection here on 7 road between D&E of the ohia die-back. I reported it to Dr. Flint.

I heard that at the last road meeting, a pastor from Oahu was looking
for HA approval to build 20 cabins for the homeless on Road 1.
Apparently he said this had already been approved by the county (which
seems really unlikely).

The impression I got was that they would be bringing homeless over from
Oahu to live here. Imagine the culture shock of city folk being dumped
on Road 1; no services, no transportation, inadequate septic systems.

Does anyone know the real story?

so, go to road meeting... guy comes in does his speil , wants to bring a HOMELESS ENCAMPMENT into the acres. buying 4 acres on ONE ROAD and wants to build 20 homes and bus in hilo's homeless. wants to teach them trades like small engine repair, pipe fitting and aquaponics ( had to throw some type agi stuff in there). trying for a special use permit. so since we don't have any problems with THEFT, we have all this nice bus service to get them around and such good police coverage here, he was hoping everyone would welcome them with open arms and that HARC and HACA would send the county words of encouragement... of course, he doesnt live here, just wants the acres to take care of his problem for his feel good day... so just passing this along if this is something up your alley....

Lucy Sawyer hope you are right jack. this guy said county offered to fund it but he had his own monies... people were leaving the road meeting, a few people stood around to listen but it really wasn't a road issue.. patrice said something about our ag zoning being different from other subdivisions, that it was really just ag where others had some differences? not really sure, maybe patrice will chime in....

Patrice Macdonald I merely mentioned that HPP , orchidland etx have rural zoning. That's mixed commercial, retail , AG uses . etc , More appropriate z . I did mention HA has only pure agricultural use not mixed commercial zoning . He said he turned down $$ for hilo center

Diane Winslow Really? Fred. I will consider it because you say so.

Lance Olinger It's not quite a homeless encampment but rather there will be multiple buildings, not tents, where people can stay who follow the rules. It is aimed towards rehabilitation, so in reality something like this should reduce theft not increase.

Lance Olinger The lots they picked are in the upper acres on 1 road on the fern acres side where the 2 acre lots are where there aren't too many people at. If they did it most people in the acres wouldn't notice.

Lucy Sawyer Exactly lance, the people who like the idea, aren't the neighbors. believe me, the people on one road are not too happy.
August 16 at 6:18pm · Like
Lance Olinger They are totally entitled to that, I doubt that it will be able to go through just based on the zoning of the acres.
