The Arts Program for the Summer of 1996
The arts facility is well equipped for enabling members to gain a
basic understanding of the arts and to apply that over the years of
association with the Boys and Girls Club into quality and beauty. The
Art Director is Robert Miller MFA.
The Art Room is open from 9am to 6pm Monday through Friday.
Mornings the shop is open to all members for woodworking,
bike shop, hand building clay, jewelry, drawing, painting, and free
form sculpture. Those enrolled in classes may work on their class
projects.
Excursions will be taken on Thursdays for drawing and
painting on location, gathering natural materials like seeds and
bamboo, trips to art events, and beach days. These will be announced
at least a week in advance.

Class subject descriptions:
Beginning drawing teaches basic drawing technique sketch pad and
drawing tools provided; Intermediate drawing teaches composition and
further refines the students' awareness of technique, sketch pad and
drawing tools provided.

mixing, a color set, paper and brushes are provided. Intermediate

pots, vases and cups, as well as applying the wheel to making other
forms, one 20 pound bag of clay, tool kit, glazes and the firing of

steps of using spruce, mahogany and Koa woods to make a working canoe
paddle of their very own.
Koa wood pendant making teaches the use of basic hand and power tools
to create small wood pendants in the shape of the youths own drawing
of a hook, heart, paddle, dolphin or other shape. They can create a
bracelet or necklace too.
Rocket Club youth can purchase their model rocket kit from toy and
hobby stores or select and pay for a model from the Estes catalog in
the art room, construct and paint the model, then take it to Kapiolani
Park and test it for performance against models built by other club
members. Each engine cost $1.00 in the a, b and c range and $2.00 for
the d size. Each youth usually fires twice per outing every two
weeks. Gliders are also a good kit selection as they do not require
engines.
Box Car Racers is a new program area that is being developed to give
members life skills in the process of finding sponsors for their cars
and provide an exciting way to learn basic tool and mechanical skills
and healthy competition. Three members will be assigned to each car.
The kits are $395 each and there are sponsors willing to
participate in this brand new American Box Car Racing Association
