I guess there's no way to discuss Mr. Chick's work without talking
about his penchant for conspiracy. His list of boogymen include:

The Roman Catholic Church
Mormans
Islam
ANY Bible version other than the KJV
MOST mainstream Christianity (that doesn't conform to "the world
according to Chick".
And the list goes on and on....................................

Do you think he's THAT paranoid, or is it tongue in cheek?

I think,  in fact, I know, he's sincere. But the key to understanding his world view is his belief in Satan. Many Christians today don't believe in the devil. But if you DO believe in the devil, thinking that Satan doesn't do things like creat false religious is difficult to imagine. After all, the false religions certainly help him a lot!

So he would probably frame it like this: "Am I paranoid? YOU BET! Because the Bible warned me that Satan will do ANYTHING to take my soul to hell, and I believe the Bible. If you don't, it sounds like Satan has already won. Remember, you're not really being paranoid if they really are out to get you!" I remember somewhere Chick said or quoted the phrase, "Satan's greatest accomplishment is convincing most everyone that he doesn't really exist."

You can't fault the guy for logic!

Although I think Jack has over simplified the matter, he's correct
when he made the statement about Satan's greatest accomplishment. The
thing that I find puzzling is that most folks have no trouble at all
believing in Satan, yet they can't seem to believe in God. I've known
those who completely believe in ghosts, UFOs and other supernatural
powers, but want to deny God's ability to perform miricles.

I also feel that most folks miss the points Chick makes in his tracts
because the messages are so simple. It's as if they feel anything so
easy to understand must be wrong.

I don't think I have ever looked at his work as spiritual or churchly...I
have always looked at his work as entertainingly moral. I know there is a
message but I would rather see it as a morals issue. I hope I said that
right or atleast to a point that is understandable.

I can't understand the people that take issue with ghosts and god...you
can't have one without the other.

Dave, you might want to go to chick.com a look his site over.
He's full tilt, fundamentalist, somewhere to the right of John Birch.
In spite of that, his tracts are nice works of art and just plain fun
to read.

I remember reading one, Dungeon Master or something, from around 1985 or so
while I was at Fort Hood. I remember that one so well because I was playing
D&D at the time. There was one I also remember really well was The Gay
Blade. It was in the reading material at the door of most of the churches on
post as well.

I have looked at the front end of the site and I will have to delve farther.
I guess I didn't remember them being so religious. But I love the work.

I believe the tract you're thinking of was called "Dark Dungeons"

Dark Dungeons is one of my faves. It has great art, a great plot, and
an homage to John Todd to boot! That and Satan's Master are two of my
faves.

Speaking of "Dark Dungeons", thanks for the copy that was included in
my Chick Tract Club membership package! I'd never seen that one
before. Now it's proudly
displayed in my 3" binder (SEE? I follow direction really well!).
