The October 2022 issue if National Geographic also contains a fascinating article on feelings of empathy abd compassion and also of perceived unequal treatment among animals of all levels, includ I ng rats for petesake.
Feelings of empathy and of compassion and of fairness require thinking. Not math or philosophy, but some level of at least primordial conceptual thinking.
Challenging.

Can you and George, who responded to this challenge, define 'concept'.
As I see it, it is very difficult to 'think down' or to 'think up'. We can't know what the experience of an 'angel' might be and we can't shuck all our ways to 'think' like a dog or cat. Clearly every animal makes some assessments of its environment, capturing prey or fleeing from a predator. Or noticing where a chain link fence is low enough to leap over.
Is employment of concepts limited to entities that use 'language'.
