I just finished [re-]reading Charlotte Bronte's novel Jane Eyre.

A truly fascinating novel.  [ am actually not sure I ever read it before, and if not, how much I would have missed, and if I did, I was far too.immature and historically unaware thso perceive its power.]

Ground breaking.  Showed women, young women oof the lower economic levels as non-dependent thinking, deciding centers of selfhood , non-subservient in dignity.

A challenge to the core of 'accepted' female roles and assumptions in the early 19th century.

I heartily recommend that all read or reread it now, being so much aware of facts on the ground as we all are now.

Now to re-innoculate myself into male and historical blindness.  Back to another Harry Bosch cop novel!

 Steve,

To be candid, I bristle at the thought of reading a British novel published in the year said British were moving savagely forward on their genocidal treatment of the Irish, my ancestors on both sides included among them.

Now I opened a copy of Jane Eyre and the prose seems stilted and lugubrious.

Can you suggest a passage or two or even one or two chapters that would convey what you found interesting?

I'll be reading on my PC, not in hard copy.

Best,

Jim

Also, Jim, this book is in no way a celebration of, or dependent fir it's power on a ratification of British Imperialism.
