Brothers --
As haustus seems to be drifting off into the sunset of being ignored, I find myself, by chance, reading several things about the damn Brits.
--- n the September 2022 issue of History Today, about the life of Elizabeth Stuart, the daughter of James IV of Scotland who became James I of Britain.
--- on the same issue, about the really necessary, dangerous and deadly, and almost intolerable processes of the British convoy system during the Napoleanic Wars.
--- And in the October 20, 2022, issue of The New York Review of Books, Fintan O'Toole on the oddity of Elizabeth II shwn in her country on her death, who was also so often referred to by her lower class subjects as "Betty," a fact of the "The Two Elizabeths" that was essential to her significance and survival as Queen. The article concludes eith the idea that Elizabeth/Betty is stereo while busynody Charles is mono.
--- In that same issue, a booknreview by Darryl Pinckney of The Palace Papers, a book about the transition of the Eindsors from mystery and opacity to public transparency and what that has meant.
I am not an anglophile. But, unlike Jim, I don't hate Britain or despise Churchill either. The most significant fact of the history of Elizabeth II is that her reign saw the British "Empire" go from 70 nations down to 'the Falklands and a smattering of convenient tax havens.'
But Britain was something for a long time, both harmful and beneficial, and it may be so again in some unforeseen way.
