GOH --

I just read a piece in the October 3033 National Geographic about Afghanistan today.

God, I am glad Biden decided not to repeat Vietnam in Afghanistan and that we got out quick and dirty when we did.

The one thing I have been trying g to understand is Jim's charge that the U.S. is initiating an embargo on Afghan government funds.  As far as I can tell, it is the United Nations that is imposing sanctions on the Taliban..  I just don't understand the facts gere.

As far as I am concerned, any back handed way in support of any and all front handed ways to oppose the Taliban's participation in the world economy as long as it treats women thevway it does is presumptively entitled to moral approval.

But what that means in pragmatic reality is so confusing as to be unintelligible to me.

One thing I don't in any way understand is just what Biden, or the UN, wants the Taliban to do to trigger the release of these funds.  What is the desired end game here?

Further, I don't know what Obama intended when Obama bombed the Taliban.  Or did he do this as such?

Any help in understanding all this would be appreciated.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden signed an executive order Friday freezing $7 billion in Afghan funds held in the U.S. and will seek to use that money for humanitarian aid for the Afghan people and potential legal payouts to victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.
The administration said the move was the first step in what will likely be a lengthy legal process to set up a trust fund and transfer the money from the Afghan central bank to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. If transfer of the funds is ultimately cleared by the courts, half of the funds will be made available to Sept. 11 families pursuing legal claims against the Taliban and the other half will go to humanitarian assistance for the Afghan people.

As for Obama and the Taliban, it was George Bush who initiated the 'search for Bin Laden' in Afghanistan.

Bush announced a comprehensive plan to seek out and stop terrorists around the world. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were part of the Global War on Terror, or ..

Best.

And add this double dose of cowplop to this mess:

From the THOT with the GWOT!
On September 20, 2001, President George W. Bush demanded that the Taliban stop harboring members of al-Qaeda, and warned that the GWOT would not end until terrorism was eradicated.
Our war on terror begins with al Qaeda, but it does not end there.  It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated.

You know, under our law, it is perfectly acceptable to freeze a potential defendant's property prior to and subject to an future eventual court judgment.

Particularly when the fear was that the potential defendant's would hide their assets prior to the end of the court case.

I did it often in Virginia courts and it was often done to my clients.

The legal term under both Virginia and federal law as carried out in courts iwhere I practiced was "attachment before judgment."

If that is all the U.S.government did, them it was merely following the law.

So, besides being an apologist for Putin's war, now you are an opponent of what Bush said?

Wouldn't it first have to be proven that the Taliban sheltered their adversaries Al Qaeda, before we went supine in 2001 to accept an attack that would provide the neoconservative pretext to wreck Iraq?

Best,

Jim

No, that is the whole point of the legal procedure under the law called "attachment before judgment."

Just following the law.
