I'm building an application to automatically trigger a download of a Dropbox file shared with a user (shared file/folder link). This was straight forward to implement for Dropbox links to files, as is outlined here.
When downloading direct shared links to files through python I was getting html pages instead of actual file content. Changing ?dl=1 wasn't helping. I then noticed that wget was downloading the actual file, even when ?dl=0. Seems like dropbox detects wget user agent and responds with the file, so setting the user agent header to Wget/1.16 (linux-gnu) in python solved the issue, now any dropbox shared link is being downloaded properly:
I am trying to upload a whole folder to Dropbox at once but I can't seem to get it done is it possible? And even when I am trying to upload a single file I have to precise the file extension in the Dropbox path, is there another way to do it?code I am using
EDIT: Note that this code doesn't create empty directories. It will copy all the files to the right location in Dropbox, but if there are empty directories, those won't be created. If you want the empty directories, consider using client.file_create_folder (using each of the directories in dirs in the loop).
dropbox is generally installing a "share" drive on local. When you upload on remote there is a lot of synching overhead that is going to make all the process slower. I chose to let dropbox do the synching in the background it made more sense for the problem i was facing and my guess is it is the right solution for most problem. Remember that the dropbox is not a remote database it is a local folder that is mirrored everywhere.
i didn't really measure but on local it took me about 10 second the other way took around 22 minutes so all in all it was about X 130 times faster than writing to local folder and let dropbox doing the synch than writing to the dropbox by using the other method people seem to recommend for unknown reason
I am trying to access files stored on my Dropbox using the offical Dropbox SDK for Python.. I tried a few ways of putting in the directory name whose contents I wanted to have listed based off of a script taken from this link -science/how-to-use-the-dropbox-api-with-python. Following the instructions in this website, I created an App, generated a dropbox access token (which produced 'long-gibberish'), and gave myself read permissions for Files and Folders.
I have been able to make it list all files and folders in my Dropbox root, and return the metadata, however I can't figure out how to determine if the output metadata is for a file FileMetadata or folder FolderMetadata.
What do I need to do to check if the returned object is File or Folder, or specify to only return folders or only return files in my lists? That way I should be able to loop through all folders and files throughout my entire dropbox.
I am new to both Atom and Python. Is there a way to log statements and break point debug inside of Atom while a rhino python script runs? I have been using print and going through the Rhino history window.
You should have given your app Full Dropbox access type. With App Folder access type, your app is automatically restricted to the corresponding folder under Apps, and hence all paths passed to files_list_folder() running under that app are interpreted relative to your app's dedicated folder.
If you have a large number of files, a simple call to dbx.files_list_folder() will only return a portion of your files -- it returns only 500 files for me. In order to get all the remaining files, you can make use of a cursor along with the dbx.files_list_folder_continue() as follows:
I have a script that is intended to be run by multiple users on multiple computers, and they don't all have their Dropbox folders in their respective home directories. I'd hate to have to hard code paths in the script. I'd much rather figure out the path programatically.
EDIT:I am not using the Dropbox API in the script, the script simply reads files in a specific Dropbox folder shared between the users. The only thing I need is the path to the Dropbox folder, as I of course already know the relative path within the Dropbox file structure.
This should work on Win7. The use of getEnvironmentVariable("APPDATA") instead of os.getenv('APPDATA') supports Unicode filepaths -- see question titled Problems with umlauts in python appdata environvent variable.

I am trying to connect to Dropbox to read in a csv into my python program. I can currently connect, but I can't access the folder I want to access. I configured my app to have all access. When I click on "All Files" in Dropbox Desktop, I currently have two folder there- We'll call them Folder 1 and Folder 2. I want to access a file within Folder 2, which is a Team folder. We do not have Team Space as far as I can tell but I could be wrong ,if that's applicable.
This code works just fine, but it only prints out the file/folder names within Folder 1. As you can see, my path is an empty string, which should point it to my root. Is there a reason I can't see or access the other folder? I have admin access to Folder 2. It behaves as though that folder doesn't exist and Folder 1 is my root folder. I thought the "All Files" link in dropbox would take me to my root, which would mean Folder 1 and Folder 2 would be children of it, but it doesn't seem to think so. How can I access the correct files?
By default, API calls operate in the "member folder" of the connected account, not the "team space". You can configure API calls to operate in the "team space" instead though. To do so, you'll need to set the "Dropbox-API-Path-Root" header. You can find information on this in the Team Files Guide.
I will have a Dropbox's shared folder on my home server. Everytime someone else, who is sharing that folder, puts anything into that folder, I want my home server to wait until it is fully uploaded and move all the files to another folder, and removing those files from the Dropbox folder, thus, saving Dropbox space.
The thing here is, I can't just track for changes in the folder and move the files right away, because if someone uploads a large file, Dropbox will already start downloading and therefore showing changes in the folder on my home server.
There is a Python dropbox CLI client, as you mentioned in your question. It returns "Idle..." when it isn't actively processing files. The absolutely simplest mechanism I can imagine for achieving what you want would be a while loop that checked the output of dropbox.py filestatus /home/directory/to/watch and performed an scp of the contents and then a delete on the contents if that suceeded. Then slept for five minutes or so.
I have my account hooked up to my Dropbox account, so I have a /Dropbox/PythonAnywhere shared folder. Today I accessed a project within my /Dropbox/PythonAnywhere folder from another device. When I came back to pythonanywhere.com, my shared folder had changed from PythonAnywhere to pythonanywhere (Conflicted Copy 1), but only through the PythonAnywhere interface (both Bash and the web interface). I can't mv it back to PythonAnywhere because I don't have permission. I know that this is a Dropbox thing, but I was wondering if you guys had seen this before, and how I can resolve it?
It looks like you've got 2 problems, there. The first is that the device you accessed your Dropbox folder from messed with the case of the folder, so Dropbox duped it. That's not too much of an issue, but if the extra folder really bothers you, we can safely remove it from your account.
This call also returns the has_more boolean, indicating if more results are available, as well as a cursor. Successfully enumerating all files in a folder requires calling /files/list_folder_continue with each successive cursor string until has_more is false.
However, these cursors are not only for useful pagination. Folder cursors are pointers to the folder at a particular time - and thus you may use a cursor to fetch changes that occurred after the time the cursor value was issued. Your list /files/list_folder_continue with a given cursor may return 0 results with has_more:false now, but calling it after modifying content in the folder will return those changes.
Folder cursors are long-lived, but may expire if unused for an extend time. Thus, while polling, be sure to always update to the latest returned cursor - even if no results are returned. A call to continue with an expired cursor will return a 409 reset error. This indicates you should issue a new call to /files/list_folder and iterate to obtain a new cursor. If the folder itself that the cursor refers to is deleted, the call will return a 409 path error.
If your application is only interested in changes going forward, the /files/list_folder/get_latest_cursor will return the most recent cursor, without needing to iterate through list and continue calls.
For interactive applications that need real-time notification of a change in Dropbox, rapid polling is inefficient. These client-side applications should instead leverage /files/list_folder/longpoll for these cases.
Passing your cursor to the call will simply block until a change is detected (or its timeout occurs). Once long poll signals change, you can use /files/list_folder_continue to list the updates. This methodology will let you respond quickly and efficiently to changes.
