| Welcome |
What a day! We're sure you'll agree that yesterday's Virgin London Marathon was an amazing event. For those of you who ran, our partners Lucozade Sport have put together this inspiring video montage to remind you about the pleasure and pain of running the greatest marathon in the world. At the head of the field, in a perfectly judged performance, the men's winner Tsegaye Kebede came from behind to regain his crown, having won here in 2010. The Ethiopian runner thrilled the London crowds by taking the lead in the final mile to win in 2:06:04, 30 seconds ahead of second-placed Emmanuel Mutai of Kenya. Kebede's training partner Ayele Abshero was third in 2:06:57.
In the women's race, Kenya's Priscah Jeptoo went one better than the silver she picked up at last year's Olympic Games when she crossed the finish line in 2:20:15. Her teammate Edna Kiplagat finished in 2:21:32 to make it a Kenyan one-two, ahead of Yukiko Akaba - the first women from Japan to claim a London Marathon podium place.
A tight finish in the men's wheelchair marathon saw eight athletes sprint for the line. Australia's Kurt Fearnley broke the tape first, although Marcel Hug of Switzerland was given the same time of 1:31:29. Great Britain's David Weir couldn't produce his usual sprint finish and slipped back to fifth after going for his seventh London win.
The USA's Tatyana McFadden enjoyed a double celebration yesterday, winning her first London Marathon in a new course record on her 24th birthday in the women's wheelchair race. Her training partner Amanda McGrory (USA) finished second, with Switzerland's Sandra Graf in third.
The inaugural IPC Athletics Marathon World Cup was part of the London Marathon for the first time, giving athletes with limb impairments and visually impaired runners an opportunity to compete over the marathon distance. Britain's Paralympic champion Richard Whitehead won the T42 category, coming home in 3:15:53.
Behind them more than 34,000 runners completed their own marathon journey. To relive the amazing action, click here for our round-up of the race highlights.

| Training tip 1 |
How can I maintain my fitness after the Marathon? After allowing the body to recover for a few days following the Marathon, you should start to think about how to capitalise on your current fitness level. The good news is that it is easier to maintain your fitness level than start afresh from scratch. By cutting back on the miles and running at a faster pace it is possible to keep the fitness level right up there. If you ran four times a week before the marathon then by cutting back to two or three times a week you can still maintain your level of fitness with minimal effort. This will enable you to focus and plan your next race (preferably not another marathon unless it is a good few months off) as you already know that you are fit and ready for another challenge. |

| Training tip 2 |
I'm feeling a little deflated – what should I do? Running a marathon is a major achievement and it is perfectly normal to feel a little deflated once race day is over. To overcome this feeling you should make a new goal. Obviously it is a good idea to have a decent rest, but without a clear goal for the future that rest can become permanent. The good news is that you can maintain your current fitness levels by running 10 plus miles once every couple of weeks. So rather than distance, you may like to look instead at working on your speed. You could do shorted, faster-paced sessions, such as interval training and hill work. Remember if you want to run the 2014 Virgin Money London Marathon the online entry will open to all applicants on Monday 29th April. |
