Hello Kumar, Karan Rai, Anshul

I tried to contact the three of you yesterday regarding the Golden Jubilee event kick-off that Hostel 7 students are organizing.   I still want to talk to you, but to save time and to reach broader H7 HATS, I am sharing the info details with the entire H7 core group.

Hello ALL:

The H7 GJ event is almost upon us.  I just got the event details from Amit Kumar (current G.Sec,) a few hours ago and hence the lateness in contacting you.

This is a rather long message with a lot of bits of information and action items.  Please take time to read carefully.  Feel free to share your thoughts..  This request is to solicit help from all of you to roll up your sleeves and make the GJ event a great success.  Feel free to share ideas/comments/thoughts.
  • The name of H7 core group (this group) is changed to hostel H7 HATS and the group ID is hat...@googlegroups.com.  This change has been made in order to be consistent with the names of the HATS groups of other hostels. The membership & objectives remain unchanged.  With the exception of Prof Ranjan Panda (H7 warden), Bakul Desai (IITBAA Chair) and Vishwas Goel (IITB HATS ALumni secy), all members are past or current H7 office bearers. If you would like to view group membership, here are the instructions
  • Karan Rai SIngh (78 ChemE) is my senior and was also H7 G.sec one year prior to me.  Like me, he has recently retired from paid work and relocated to India (Uttarakhand).  Even after 30+ years, he is passionately in love with the old Lady.  Earlier this year he and several other batchmates organized a very successful reunion at H7.  He wants to take an active role in this group.  We all welcome him.
  • I have been to H7 several times in the past month.  I also met the warden, Ranjan Panda, who came over to meet me late at night.    I am quite impressed with the passion of the current office bearers and the warden.  They have not only a lot of fresh ideas, but they have begun implementing of them.  The team is very busy organizing the GJ kickoff.
  • Warden and the students recognized that since this is a short notice, not a lot of alumni would be able to come at the kickoff.  So we decided to keep the event open for 3 months and the alumni could come whenever there schedule permits.  The GJ celebration will last through January 2014.  Here is the link for the GJ kick-off invite.  This is a  3-day event packed with a lot of activities.  Here is the link to the action packed 3-days.  When I looked at how jam-packed the three days are, I started wondering how can the students have so much free time on hand - The educational rigour at IITB must have dropped off.  Anyway, the alumni are invited to all three days, but I suspect that many will not be able to spare all three days.  So we should make a pitch for attending at least the last day, Sunday Oct 27.  This is when two new HaTS projects will be Kicked off at 4:30 PM:
    • Abhyasika - This is to educate the CURRENT mess workers.  The current mess workers are really kids - in their late teens and early 20s.  The students want to provide them targeted training (e.g., police work) so that they can pass the exams and get better paying jobs. For More, click on this link.
    • Make Hostel My Home - I trust that most of you have heard about the MH*2 concept.  If not, click here to watch a photo story put together by students. The idea is to empower students to improve their living environment.  Some of the ideas to encourage students are:

Periodic Audits and prizes (e.g. free washing passes for the winning wing)
Promotion and encouragement - Post pictures on the web. (Good, Bad, Ugly)
Press students and authorities to act
Annual trophy for the “Homeliest Wing”
    • This concept has been languishing for ~3 years.  Last month I had organized a meeting with G.Secs of all the hostels amongst whom I saw high level of interest.  We have decided to "pilot" the program at H7 and once we iron out the details, we would roll MH*2 to all other hostels.  Amit (G.sec) and Ranjan (warden) are very supportive of piloting MH*2 at H7.  Amit is putting together the implementation details and will share with us later today.  (Amit - you are on notice...)
    • I will be discussing with Bakul (IITBAA chair) and Damayanti (IITBAA CEO) if we can get media coverage when these projects are kicked off.
  • Now coming to some personalized requests:
    • Kumar - Would you please send out an email and an invite to the Yahoo group. Please make a strong pitch for the bomayites to participate.  I have created a web sign-up form so that Amit (G.sec) can have a rough count.
    • Balaji - Likewise, would you please send out to your group.  Pl coordinate with Kumar to minimize duplicated effort.
    • ALL:  We want to reach out to as many of H7 junta as possible, and as quickly as possible.  One way is to ask past H7 office bearers to forward the invite to their H7 contacts.  We have begun collecting the contact info of the office bearers.  Would you please click here to access this google DB and provide any contact ifo that you might have.  Please provide the info by Fri 18th.
    • Karan Rai - By 18th we should have contact info of past office bearers.  Would you please send an email to this group by 19th, informing of this event and requesting them to forward it to all their H7 contacts.  coordinate with Kumar/Balaji to avoid duplicated effort.
    • We can also extract the H7 distribution list from the AA database.  I will contact Bakul and Damayanti for their help .

I think there is enough info for you to think about and start working.  I will share more later.

One suggestion :

In order to attract more alumni to attend and to have something meaningful happen at the time they are there (dinner), I'd recommend that the launch of Abhyasika and MH*2 should be done at the dinner event rather than separately earlier at 4:30pm. My two cents.

On the same lines, i think that generally it will be hard these days for anyone to spare three days for any function. Can we get a big enough number (attendance) in such a short period of time?

Thanks Kumar.

Are we going to vote on this issue or does this need to be a unanimous decision?

If I may, let me add my two bits.
H7 will not have to pay old mess workers henceforth because they've all been paid and those who've relocated to other hostels will be paid partially from there. H7 has a current positive balance of 17.19 lacs.  How you want to use this is totally upto you. I think IIT should be magnanimous enough to pitch in since it's a GJ event of their property and I've written to 2 Deans and urged them to reconsider their stand on not funding this event.
I personally believe that we should not hold back from going ahead with what has been planned so diligently by students and alumni alike. After all, 4.5 lacs is a fraction of what we have and in any case. HATS funding will never go out of fashion. From all the people we invite, even if one guy gets excited enough with our program, his donation can more than make up for this expense, quite a bit of which appears to be going for some improvements and not just festivities.
But the call is yours and it comes with a caveat that we need a quick decision since we are down to the wire and we would hate to see a GJ event becoming a flop show. Maybe you'd all like to consider postponing the event to Nov or Dec. In Dec, we can get many more alumni to attend and perhaps, quite a few donors too.

One suggestion :

In order to attract more alumni to attend and to have something meaningful happen at the time they are there (dinner), I'd recommend that the launch of Abhyasika and MH*2 should be done at the dinner event rather than separately earlier at 4:30pm.  My two cents.
