Hello DB
Yes, Abhyasika is a great concept, although Kohle and SARC students tell me that there is another program with exactly same name.So H7 will have to be more creative and come up with a different name.OCt 24-27 is the kickoff, but the GJ celebrations will continue through January. So more alumni would be able to participate (i.e, visit hostel and interact with students.) They would arrange another event in January at the GJ conclusion. For now we are ok to reach out H7 alumni by emails and yahoo/google groups. We might include Phonathon next 2 months..Hemant PatelContact number : +91 98 7911 0671 (India)Muni Seva Ashram, Goraj, IndiaExcellent Renewable Pvt. H7 is launching two novel projects on Sunday, Oct 27 in the afternoon. Getting some publicity will be good because it will also set the stage for students of other hostels.
- Abhyasika - The students are taking up this project to educate the CURRENT mess workers. The current mess workers are really kids - in their late teens and early 20s. The students want to provide them targeted training (e.g., police work) so that they can pass the exams and get better paying jobs. For More, click on this link. I am very impressed that the students thought about taking some time in their busy schedule to educate the msess workers! I think the media would get a nice article. It may be titled - " IIT students become teachers" or something catchy like that.
- Make Hostel My Home - We have been talking about this for a while. Now we are ready to launch it.
Last month I had organized a meeting with G.Secs and alumni secs of all the hostels. I talked about HATS and MH*2. There was very high level of interest. Together, we decided to "pilot" MH*2 program at H7. Once we iron out the devilish details, we would roll MH*2 to all other hostels. Amit (H7 G.sec) and Ranjan (H7 warden) are very supportive of piloting MH*2 at H7.You might have seen this (photo story) before. For the H7 Pilot, students are working out the implementation details, but at a high level this would be launched as an inter-wing competition. The council would conduct monthly audits and select the best wing. Every student in the wing will get 4-5 "free wash" passes. The first three winning entries would be given points (e.g., Gold 5, Silver 3, Bronze 1) and a running tally would be made. The wing that gets most points for the entire year would get a big prize. This could be given during the annual welfi event.Once the students have drafted the "rule book", I will share with IITBAA directors for their comments and upgrades.

Hello Kumar, Karan Rai, AnshulI tried to contact the three of you yesterday regarding the Golden Jubilee event kick-off that Hostel 7 students are organizing. I still want to talk to you, but to save time and to reach broader H7 HATS, I am sharing the info details with the entire H7 core group.Hello ALL:The H7 GJ event is almost upon us. I just got the event details from Amit Kumar (current G.Sec,) a few hours ago and hence the lateness in contacting you.
This is a rather long message with a lot of bits of information and action items. Please take time to read carefully. Feel free to share your thoughts.. This request is to solicit help from all of you to roll up your sleeves and make the GJ event a great success. Feel free to share ideas/comments/thoughts.
- The name of H7 core group (this group) is changed to hostel H7 HATS and the group ID is hat...@googlegroups.com. This change has been made in order to be consistent with the names of the HATS groups of other hostels. The membership & objectives remain unchanged. With the exception of Prof Ranjan Panda (H7 warden), Bakul Desai (IITBAA Chair) and Vishwas Goel (IITB HATS ALumni secy), all members are past or current H7 office bearers. If you would like to view group membership, here are the instructions
- Karan Rai SIngh (78 ChemE) is my senior and was also H7 G.sec one year prior to me. Like me, he has recently retired from paid work and relocated to India (Uttarakhand). Even after 30+ years, he is passionately in love with the old Lady. Earlier this year he and several other batchmates organized a very successful reunion at H7. He wants to take an active role in this group. We all welcome him.
- I have been to H7 several times in the past month. I also met the warden, Ranjan Panda, who came over to meet me late at night. I am quite impressed with the passion of the current office bearers and the warden. They have not only a lot of fresh ideas, but they have begun implementing of them. The team is very busy organizing the GJ kickoff.
- Warden and the students recognized that since this is a short notice, not a lot of alumni would be able to come at the kickoff. So we decided to keep the event open for 3 months and the alumni could come whenever there schedule permits. The GJ celebration will last through January 2014. Here is the link for the GJ kick-off invite. This is a 3-day event packed with a lot of activities. Here is the link to the action packed 3-days. When I looked at how jam-packed the three days are, I started wondering how can the students have so much free time on hand - The educational rigour at IITB must have dropped off. Anyway, the alumni are invited to all three days, but I suspect that many will not be able to spare all three days. So we should make a pitch for attending at least the last day, Sunday Oct 27. This is when two new HaTS projects will be Kicked off at 4:30 PM:
- Abhyasika - This is to educate the CURRENT mess workers. The current mess workers are really kids - in their late teens and early 20s. The students want to provide them targeted training (e.g., police work) so that they can pass the exams and get better paying jobs. For More, click on this link.
- Make Hostel My Home - I trust that most of you have heard about the MH*2 concept. If not, click here to watch a photo story put together by students. The idea is to empower students to improve their living environment. Some of the ideas to encourage students are:
• Periodic Audits and prizes (e.g. free washing passes for the winning wing)• Promotion and encouragement - Post pictures on the web. (Good, Bad, Ugly)• Press students and authorities to act• Annual trophy for the “Homeliest Wing”- This concept has been languishing for ~3 years. Last month I had organized a meeting with G.Secs of all the hostels amongst whom I saw high level of interest. We have decided to "pilot" the program at H7 and once we iron out the details, we would roll MH*2 to all other hostels. Amit (G.sec) and Ranjan (warden) are very supportive of piloting MH*2 at H7. Amit is putting together the implementation details and will share with us later today. (Amit - you are on notice...)
- I will be discussing with Bakul (IITBAA chair) and Damayanti (IITBAA CEO) if we can get media coverage when these projects are kicked off.
- Now coming to some personalized requests:
- Kumar - Would you please send out an email and an invite to the Yahoo group. Please make a strong pitch for the bomayites to participate. I have created a web sign-up form so that Amit (G.sec) can have a rough count.
- Balaji - Likewise, would you please send out to your group. Pl coordinate with Kumar to minimize duplicated effort.
- ALL: We want to reach out to as many of H7 junta as possible, and as quickly as possible. One way is to ask past H7 office bearers to forward the invite to their H7 contacts. We have begun collecting the contact info of the office bearers. Would you please click here to access this google DB and provide any contact ifo that you might have. Please provide the info by Fri 18th.
- Karan Rai - By 18th we should have contact info of past office bearers. Would you please send an email to this group by 19th, informing of this event and requesting them to forward it to all their H7 contacts. coordinate with Kumar/Balaji to avoid duplicated effort.
- We can also extract the H7 distribution list from the AA database. I will contact Bakul and Damayanti for their help .
I think there is enough info for you to think about and start working. I will share more later.Hemant PatelContact number : +91 98 7911 0671 (India)Muni Seva Ashram, Goraj, IndiaExcellent Renewable Pvt. Ltd., Valsad, India1804 Key Blvd., El Cerrito, CA 94530 (510) 423-9823

Frankly, I am at best ambivalent about this. When the money was raised, MOST of the money came for the messworker fund. Some for the education initiatives. Many of the activities (funding gala dinner, T-shirts, laser tag...) etc sound more like entertainment than the kind of social initiatives for which the alumni had agreed to contribute their money. I would be willing to bet that if you go to the larger alumni pool and ask for money for such activities as funding dinners and T-shirts, it would be hard to raise ~$3000 that's being requested.
I don't think this is a good use of HATS funds - it is against the spirit through which the money was originally raised for "the lady of the lake".

The first three winning entries would be given points (e.g., Gold 5, Silver 3, Bronze 1) and a running tally would be made. The wing that gets most points for the entire year would get a big prize. This could be given during the annual welfi event.
Once the students have drafted the "rule book", I will share with IITBAA directors for their comments and upgrades.

Hello Kumar, Karan Rai, Anshul
I tried to contact the three of you yesterday regarding the Golden Jubilee event kick-off that Hostel 7 students are organizing. I still want to talk to you, but to save time and to reach broader H7 HATS, I am sharing the info details with the entire H7 core group.
Hello ALL:
The H7 GJ event is almost upon us.
I will share more later.

just curious... wouldn't it present more opportunities to raise funds for the hostel from the Alumni attending? That's what I am thinking, that this expense could serve its purpose in the long term. In any case, we need to make sure that there will be enough attendance from Alumni side (who could be potential donors)
Hostel team, do we have an idea who all have confirmed to attend the GJ functions?

Unless we have concrete plans to turn this into a fundraising opportunity (which I have not seen), I don't think it makes sense to invest $3000 in the name of fundraising. To put it in perspective, our fundraising expenses to date have been near $0.
I mean absolutely no disrespect for the H7 junta that's planning this event. I think it is an EXCELLENT idea and I am thrilled that they are organizing this event to celebrate the 50th birthday of the lady.
My views are solely based on appropriateness of redirecting HATS funds (which were originally raised under H7 program that had nothing to do with HATS, by the way) into this activity. We are custodians of H7 funds, and they were raised based for a set of activities and causes. This one seems rather different, that's all.

Amit (H7 G.sec) and Ranjan (H7 warden) are very supportive of piloting MH*2 at H7.
You might have seen this (photo story) before.

I will share more later.
