We are sorry to report the deaths of two of our old elementary school teachers this past month; Carol Krack and Marjorie Plant.  Carol died on July 7 and Marjorie died this past week.  Here is the obituary for Carol Krack: http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=Carol-Krack&lc=4914&pid=165744678&mid=5593460  We haven't been able to find an obituary for Marjorie Plant.

Anyone?

Greetings,

I am in touch with Sarah Plant (one of Marj Plant's daughters) She's not on this list so asked that I forward the following. Apologies if there is any duplication as it seems she tried to send it but not sure if it worked. I'm pasting the obit at the end of the message as I don't think we can send attachments. Sarah also sent a nice photo of her mother. Alan, (or someone) I can send it to you if you can send it to the list.

Best,

Barry

Dear Friends,

I'm saddened to let you know about the loss on July 26 of Marjorie Plant, who died peacefully at home shortly after her 91st birthday, about a week after having a stroke, and 6 weeks after choosing home hospice care. Know that Marj felt she'd had a "good run" and that she was pain-free and in what seemed like a pleasant dream-like state, thanks to her amazing care givers and particularly to home hospice staff.

While still able to communicate, Marj was lucky to meet her 6-month-old great-granddaughter, Sienna, about a week ago, when her granddaughter Jenn and husband Tim came to visit. I was with Marj for several days while she was able to communicate, and my sister Jane was with her as she faded away peacefully in her sleep. My sister Valerie had plane tickets to come right after Jane, and has been in close contact throughout, as has my brother Richard. I know Marj was comforted by her children and friends.

Fondly,
Sarah Plant, Marj's daughter

P.S. Marj specifically asked that there be no funeral. It's not been decided whether there might be some kind of small commemoration in the future.

Dear friends,

Barry Olsen suggested I send this sad news about my mother, Marjorie Plant, who taught third grade in Hasting in the '60s.

Attached is a very brief obituary. I'll try to send something more detailed in future once I confirm the dates she taught at Hastings, etc.

Best,
Sarah Plant

Thank you for sending this on. Marj was a wonderful person and colleague, and Richard, Sarah and Jane were memorable students. (I did not know Valerie.) It saddens me to hear of her passing (as does that of Carol Krack) but I am pleased by Sarah's note that she died peacefully.

My condolences to the Plant family.  I remember her from elementary school, never was my teacher however.  So nice she was able to see the new addition to your family.

Here is a longer obituary of Mrs. Plant that Sarah sent me. She said she is sending this to the local paper. She is moved by all the messages she's been receiving about her mother. Tried attaching the photo this time but it didn't work.

Marjorie Plant

Marjorie Plant, formerly of Hastings, died peacefully on July 26th at 91 after a short period in home hospice. Born in New York City, she was an innovative public-school teacher in the early 1960s at Hillside Elementary School in Hastings, and was a vivacious birder/naturalist.

Active in the League of Women Voters, the P.T.A., and Citizens Committee for the Public Schools, her interests ranged from youth hosteling, camping and bicycling to music, literature and art. After moving to Walnut Creek, California in 1980, she volunteered with the Berkeley Art Museum, the Audubon Society and Save Mount Diablo. Throughout her life, Marjorie took actions to help make the world a more just, humane and environmentally healthy place.

As a third-grade teacher, Marjorie championed avant-garde teaching methods, reaching out to students with learning, behavioral and emotional challenges. She encouraged students to teach one another and took students outdoors to the pond and woods to look, listen and learn from nature. Though she took no credit for his success, she was proud that political commentator Keith Olbermann was a former student, as was an activist who unfurled a Greenpeace banner on top of the Statue of Liberty. Many of her students contacted her online, decades after being in her classes.

She is survived by her husband Theodore, children Valerie Taylor, Richard, Jane and Sarah Plant, granddaughter Jennifer Nickel and great-granddaughter Sienna Nickel. Her deceased parents were David and Ernestine Dubner of NYC.

Marjorie can be honored with donations to www.earthjustice.orgwww.audubon.orgwww.savemountdiablo.org, or Public Citizen: www.citizen.org.

One of my favorite teachers, a fine lady and great spirit
I still recall the gravelly voice and the short "frizz fro"
God bless her

Barry, thanks for sending this along. She is a teacher I will always remember as very kind with a sort of well developed empathy for her young charges. She was SO kind.

One the things I remember about here is allowing her home to be used for meetings in 1969 during the first and send National Student Moratorium Against the War in Vietnam. Sarah was one the main organizers for what became effectively the first student strike at a Hastings school. I was was in 8th Grade then. Mrs. Plant was a firm supporter and defender of our right-to-strike and she, along with Bob Rittner and other teachers donned black armbands as they went to school to sit in front of empty class rooms.
