Dear colleagues,

We are excited to announce our next HAS Online Seminar by the recipient of the 2021 Sanjay and Panna Mehrotra Research Excellence Award, Dr. David Papp, from North Carolina State University. The details of the seminar are below. Click here to register for the event!

Optimization in radiotherapy: Quantifying the potential benefit of non-standard treatments
Friday, March 25, 1-2pm ET (10-11 am PT)

Abstract: Optimization models and algorithms have played a critical role in radiotherapy treatments of cancer since the advent of intensity-modulated radiotherapy in the 1990s, perfecting both the mathematical models and computational methods used in standard radiotherapy modalities. This talk will focus on another family of questions aimed at moving beyond conventional treatment planning: how optimization models can help with the selection, and possible combination, of treatment modalities, and in determining the ideal dose prescriptions for patients through a concept called biologically effective dose.

Bio: Dávid Papp is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at North Carolina State University. His research focuses on convex and polynomial optimization with applications in medicine and health care. He has co-authored over 35 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals such as Medical Physics, SIAM Journal on Optimization, and the INFORMS Journal on Computing. His algorithms developed at Massachusetts General Hospital for the solution of large-scale optimization problems in radiotherapy have been incorporated in clinical treatment planning software used worldwide. He is the recipient of the 2021 Sanjay and Panna Mehrotra Research Excellence Award for his sustained work on optimization methods and models for radiation therapy for cancer. He also received the NSF CAREER Award for his methodological research on efficient optimization over non-symmetric convex cones and polynomial optimization problems.

We are also honored to have more extraordinary speakers lined up for the upcoming seminars in the following months. Please block the same time slot 1-2pm ET (10-11am PT) on 4th Friday of April and May on your calendar for:

  • April 22, Professor Andrew Li, Carnegie Mellon University, the winner of the 2021 Pierskalla Award
  • May 27, Professor Oguzhan Alagoz, University of Wisconsin-Madison

We would like to thank everyone who attended previous seminars! If you couldn't make it before, now you can view the recordings following the links archived in the "Past Seminars" Section of our HAS seminar webpage. If you have any questions, let us know at hassemin...@gmail.com.

Feel free to share it with anyone who could be interested among your colleagues and student groups.

Looking forward to seeing you there and then!

Best regards,
