They can. But it is a very tricky road. Between Marvel and DC they publish over 200 superhero comics every month. 200 comics featuring beloved characters. Tried and true icons of pop-culture. If you have a Supergirl that you want to debut you should damn well make sure that it is filling a niche that is not being filled by Marvel and DC. It can be done. We did it with powers. But powers is literally a book Marvel and DC could never do.

Adding visuals deepened experience of the poem for me. I liked the visual contrast between the flutter of golden leaves and the flock of black birds. The rhythm of the panels gave the feeling of interrupting a walk down the street to pause and jot down an idea.

At this point in the process, the idea was set. I began to think about panel size and shape as well as the pacing of the text and images. Once it felt right, I took out my Strathmore tracing paper, Pitt artist pens, and Prismacolor markers and inked the final.

My goal for the final art is to achieve a clear, effective image with an economy of language. Color is vital to the feeling of my work; I went through half a dozen color permutations before the mood felt right.

In the case of \u201CAlight,\u201D the words arrived first. It was adapted from a poem I wrote months before. The poem was bouncing around in my head when I saw a flock of birds landing in a half-leafless tree.

That\u2019s my basic creative practice: walking around outdoors, pen and notebook in hand, hoping to stumble on a moment of insight. Luckily, autumn is full of inspiration: colorful leaves, assorted birds, days of blue skies and golden light.

Making the final art is the most stressful part of my creative process. New ideas are exciting. Writing is an exploration that can be easily edited or erased. But putting pen to paper to render an image for publication feels permanent. I don\u2019t want to mess it up and have to start over\u2014even though that frequently happens. Drawing is a delicate balance of precision and looseness.

I just released a brand new tutorial covering the setup and some cool things you can do with my updated Comic Shader for ZBrush. In the new video tutorial, I'll show you how I used the updated ZBrush material I created for this sort of 'comic-style' renders, as well as some cool tips and tricks to customise it to suit your own style. (I'm also including the material which you can download from the link on the video description on YouTube).

If you just want to test out the material with your meshes, you just need to download the material I provided (in the video description) and apply it directly to the mesh. Depending on the level of details you have on your model, you might have to smooth things out because too many details could look 'noisy' with the comic material, but overall, you should have a pretty decent comic-style effect straightaway that works with polypaint.

All of these details that you see on the final image, were created entirely in ZBrush. So you can just literally paint or sculpt in the details and as you rotate around, all of those 'bumps' and 'hatching effect' will stick with the model.

The cool thing about the new material (and what I focused on while I was updating it) is that it also works nicely with polypaint. So once you have tweaked the settings to create your outline, you add Polypaint or even a texture map and get a nice comic style image all within ZBrush.

Also, keep in mind that the material works on the preview mode so you don't even have to render anything to get a pretty convincing look on your comic illustration. The advantage of rendering in ZBrush with BPR is to get additional passes that you can use in compositing, maybe add some extra NPR filer (here is another recent tutorial on rendering and filters that might give you ideas) and also to get some cast shadows on the mesh.
