Just to confirm:

New lines are stripped when passed to Text, and that's by design, right?

I think that was done because gloss doesn’t know for sure how tall the characters are, so doesn’t know where to put the next line. The text support is very primitive. Text is drawn using a GLUT vector font, and it has no metadata like character size or kerning.
