some minor patches

I attach here a bundle of patches - two are re-rolled versions that I
sent to the list recently (for axis labels, and
stackLayout1sVertically), plus two new, more minor ones: to 80-
columnise a file with wide lines, and to fix a corner-case crashing
bug. I only enclose the earlier patches because they have not yet
made it to the official repository, and the 80-col patch depends on
one of them.
