Dear Chevra,

You may have already the tragic news that Rabbi Ellen Bernstein died
this week only a short time after being diagnosed with cancer.

Rabbi Ellen Bernstein, who lit up the earth with her passion for it, died today.

Ellen wrote or edited numerous works connecting Torah and the earth,
and was a widely respected and well-loved teacher of Judaism and the
environment. She started the first national Jewish environmental
organization, Shomrei Adamah, and she was very actively creating new
work, with her latest being on the Song of Songs. She entered the
Jewish environmental movement when it was more like a bunch of
havurot, and did so much to bring its message to the whole Jewish
world.

May her memory and her work be a blessing in a world that turns toward
healing and restoration.
