Greetings Hartford Area Birders!
I hope everyone is enjoying their Holiday Weekend, although the weather could be a bit sunnier and warmer. The annual Hartford Summer Bird Count is now two weeks away, and I hope that many of you will have a little time to spend on counting birds that weekend - June 7th and 8th. In some respects, the Summer Count is of greater value than the Christmas Bird Count it provides trends for birds that breed in our area. The Count is done much like a Christmas Count, covering the same 15 mile diameter circle. Participants count all birds seen and heard during the two day Count period, and there are a lot more birds around in June than there are in December! On the Summer Bird Count, we do count the crows! Although we take note of how much time we spend, unlike the Christmas Count, we do not keep track of distance traveled. Like the Christmas Count, the area is divided up into 12 regions. Please contact the captain for the area in which you want to bird in order to keep multiple birders from going into the same area and counting the same birds. Captains and their contact information is as follows:
Area #1 (South Windsor between Main Street and the Connecticut River)
Area #2 (Upland South Windsor)
Area #3 (Manchester)

Area #4 (Glastonbury)
Area #5 (Wethersfield/Rocky Hill)
Area #6 (Hartford)
Area #7 (Newington)
Area #8 (Farmington/Avon)
Area #9 (West Hartford)
Area #10 (Bloomfield)
Area #11 (Windsor)
Area #12 (East Hartford)
Maggie Peretto see Area #3 for contact information
Please contact a captain for specific instructions on areas to bird. Note that other than East Hartford, Hartford and West Hartford, portions of other towns fall outside the Count circle. Thus, it is important to look at the map of the circle in order to make sure your birding area is in the circle. If you have questions about circle boundaries, ask a captain or contact me.
Finally, this is a busy time of year for many of us, sand we usually have many fewer observers than we do on December's Christmas Bird Count. This year, East Hartford is particularly lacking coverage, and some areas like the Hockanum Linear Trail are important and need coverage. If you can bird in East Hartford, please contact Maggie Peretto. Even if you can spare an hour on one of the two days, it would be helpful to the Count.
Good luck, and see some rare birds (in which case get a photo, if possible, or write down as good a description of the bird as you can). Most importantly, have fun!
