Hello friends!

A couple of years ago HAS member Debbie Bishop found several Canada geese that traveled from western Greenland to Simsbury’s Meadowood property. We know this by the yellow collars that were attached to the birds’ necks. Additionally, one of the geese wore a tracking collar that confirmed its migration from Greenland to Nova Scotia, and on to Simsbury.

Unfortunately, winter barley was not planted at Meadowood this year. Instead, the field was planted with corn that has yet to be harvested. As a result, there are no large flocks of geese this fall.

I am writing to ask birders to PLEASE be on the lookout for “yellow collared” geese that may or may not be present within flocks in and around Hartford County. Additionally, please try to determine the numbers that are printed on the collars. (Photographs would be most helpful.)

If you would relay this information either to Debbie or to me, we will alert the scientists who attached the collars to the geese in Greenland.

Many thanks from
Doug Beach
