Guys,

It seems this is the laptop I am going to buy. If you know something
bad about it, tell me now, please!

Thanks

have nothing bad to say about T's
mobile coders prefer the X's (smaller screen, more bat time)
but i don't know your needs/preferences.

whats the price for that model in IL?
did you go for any upgrades?

It's damned expensive... I (alas) work almost full time in front of
the laptop. I dodn't usually do heavy processing/graphics, though. I
am thinking of i7, 8GB (instead of 4), 256 SSD.

there are many possible configurations, from 800$ to 2500$+
so if you don't mind spending money you can get a fabulous machine
very durable computer also, im still (ab)using an old T61 and it works like a charm

Oh, I mind....

So far all I hear is good. I guess I am going to for it.

I have a W510 (older generation, the biggest one).
I swear by Thinkpads because I have touchpads and use only the mini joystick in the middle of the keyboard.

I am trying to decide between the T530 which is 15.5'', big and
reliable, and the smaller T430s (s is for SLIM) which is only 14'' and
I am ot sure how reliable.
I like the big ones, but I am getting old so something with less
weight is appealing :-)

I think it's up to your personal preferences. The only advice I can give you is that CD/DVD is useless these days. Don't even bother with it.
For my work (debugging waveforms), bigger, or more precisely higher resolution is always better and since I carry it with me on the car, I chose the biggest one (and hook it into a 2nd monitor when I get to work).
If it wasn't clear, my laptop was provided by my employer, and we get to choose from the X series, the T series or the W series.

I am also buying through work. I had a big heavy one until now, but
now that I have a longer commute and I am thinking of using the train,
the weight is a factor, and I will use an external monitor in the
office.
I am not sure about the DVD though. I still burn DVDs (for backups and such).

Since I'm in the market for a new laptop too, (the downside of being unemployed: you need to buy your own computers...) I have to ask: why Lenovo?

Good question. I have a Toshiba that I really like but it is falling
apart. I never liked Lenovo, but most machines I saw seemed worse and
many people recommended the T series.

I saw some nice ASUS laptops. True. I am going with the T430s for now.
ASUS maybe next time; I didn't have time to check their support in
Israel etc.
I bought an IPAD (shame on me), and that's enough. I still have some
self-respect left.

I've used a t420s until it got stolen. it's a real beauty and working horse.. i highly recommend it, especially after working with the DELL latitude e6420, which isn't as stable or rigged.
I'm currently using a lenovo x220 and i think it's 12inch screen is better than the 14inch of the T420/t430, but that's because i mostly use a docking station (which contains a DVD). having a light and powerful (i5, enough RAM, SSD) seem more important than a larger screen or a DVD.

From my experience Asus have excellent service here. They even come to pick up the pc if you have problems. (I saw it came up earlier)

http://stores.ebay.com/New-Thinkpads
multiple sources bought from this ebay store and confirmed quality
& international warranty for lenovo is respected, unlike the white ones.

I got an expensive configuration since the boss payed for it (256gb SSD in particular)
It is from netip.co.il
They are supposed to have the best prices, according to the guys at the university.

my t420 was almost 6000 nis, but it really depends on the configuration. you can get them with SSDs of course, but also with more RAM or stronger CPU, a stronger GPU and build-in HSDPA modem. as for the dealer, i don't remember, but you can look it up on zap.co.il to find a competitive one. i think they aren't the cheapest in the market, the DELL was cheaper, but i'd still spend the 10% extra because of their high quality.
