SPEAKER BIOSJohn J. Ratey, M.D. is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He has lectured and published many articles and eight books on the topics of Aggression, Autism, ADHD, and other issues in neuropsychiatry. Dr. Ratey has most recently authored Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. In Spark Dr. Ratey imparts an understanding of neurobiology, and inspires the reader to reach for their potential, and embrace exercise that is crucial to peak performance. Spark teaches how exercise prepares the brain to learn, improves mood and attention, lowers stress and anxiety, staves off addictions, controls the effects of hormonal changes and guards against the effects of aging. Spark has ignited a new mission for Dr Ratey as he tries to revitalize the schools to combat the obesity crisis and stave off the encroaching epidemic of Sedentarism.
Craig Rodgers, Psy.D. is Director of Harvard's AAPEX (Athletic, Academic, and Personal Excellence) program, which provides sport psychology and counseling services to Harvard College student-athletes. He is also a psychologist at Harvard's Bureau of Study Counsel, where he very much enjoys helping College students work through their academic and personal challenges. Dr. Rodgers was educated at MIT (S.B. '88, S.M. '88), Harvard (Ed.M. '96), and George Washington University (J.D. '00, Psy.D. '01). He has a keen interest in group and community running, especially noncompetitive distance running (either barefoot or minimally shod) with the prospect of a very large meal at the end. On a related note, Dr. Rodgers coordinates the Harvard College Marathon Challenge program, which he started in 2005 and which brings together Harvard students, staff, and faculty to run together noncompetitively. Prior to working at Harvard, he did stints as an Outward Bound instructor and experiential educator (working mostly with adjudicated and at-risk youth), an army reservist, and a stockbroker.
