Here's the inside of the "cheap" 4TB USB Drive

I finally got it opened and it contains a loose collection of RAM chips
and a small custom circuit board with I assume is proprietary software
to provide an interface.  It still does work on Windows, however, so
I'll most likely continue to use it for storage on my Windows gaming system.

That means its back to searching for a reasonably priced 4TB USB
external drive for my Linux backup.  Surprisingly today's pricing for
the exact same drive that I'm replacing is over double the cost.  Go figure.

Just wanted interested members to know.
