Hey Everyone, We got the confirmation letter from the Tony Hawk Foundation!!  There are two important issues we need to address and other important stuff everyone should be aware of...

1)  Charter Oak is the fiscal sponsor but when the check is received, I'll need to write a check for the $10,000 ASAP to get the money out the door because otherwise, it'll screw up Charter Oak's accounting and the board will be super pissed.  So, who should I make the check out to?  Luis, should I write it to the City of Hartford and give it to you?  Ron, could I write the check to Knox Parks for you to hold onto until its time to build?  Let me know what I should do.

2) Tony Hawk had another recommendation for changing the design a bit.  Its in the attached scan of the letter along with his handwritten notes on the design itself but he says that he thinks it would be best to "replace the stair set with a quarterpipe for return to the central funbox, and swapping the two step-up banks. (It is helpful to have lanes for inexperienced park visitors)"

Also FYI in the letter it says "We ask that you dont imply that Tony will be appearing at your park."

We (I) have to submit progress reports every six months until the park opens "detailing the manner in which the grant money has been spent".  They also require a final report once the park opens, along with a photograph showing the entire skatepark (so I'll need some help with that).

If you have the time, its probably worthwhile for you all to read the contract just so you can see what we have to do and cant do.

Thanks!
(laura)

I think we should keep it in the Knox account, but that's just my opinion. I don't think we want to turn it over until everything is design-wise.

Hoping he shows up doesn't imply he's going to show up, right?

Knox could hold the Tony Hawk funds until we build.

Can we use some of the $$$ for celebration of the grant in April 28th or may 6th. We don't need a massive system that day.

I'm confused...we're having a celebration for the grant?

Its a event for the grant to let the community know what happend also a event to show the community that we still doing it. Alot of skaters want this and alot don't know that we were awarded the grant. Simple day of food music and skating with a few performances and a tony hawk mural. In honor of the grant.

I would think staying engaged with skate community would be really beneficial to the project overall ... perhaps we can have a contest for fresh art work for T's?  Speaking of murals I would like to explore having a textile mural that gets cut up and made into apparel.... I can run this concept by Hartford Denim Co. too.

Yeah, that sounds great. Some sort of event to let people know this is still happening is a good idea....But I don't think we are allowed to use any of the money for a party. The CDBG and Tony Hawk grant funds are specifically for building the park.

To be honest, I thought we had more than we do in the Knox acct. so we should probably hold off on t-shirts. I'm a little concerned we still might need money for an engineer at some point.

Maybe we should hold off on spending any of it until we meet or get some answers?

I think we should hold off on anything until we're done and it's a ribbon cutting, but that's just.

If we're not, we should wait until we have a contractor and a calendar. If we want to engage and inform, we're going to need to have some actual timelines and details to tell people.

Besides, the Tony Hawk thing was front page news. I'm pretty sure word got out.

???? Everyone else thinks its a dope idea. Why are you guys dissing it? Its not a party but a outside celebration/ mural dedication. Ribbon cutting and all that is separate with better planning. I understand about the funds so is peace.

I don't think anyone is dissing the idea. My only issue was the money aspect, but i think the more events that happen the better!  If you wanna do a mural celebration, go for it...no one is trying to stop ya :)

How about if we turn the event into a fundraising party with products for sale?

I might have missed an email or two so forgive me if I'm off base with this stuff....

I'm always down for a party but there are a couple of considerations we might want to think about:

1) In the grant contract, they say something about using tony hawks name or likeness so we would have to take a closer look at what they actually meant.

2) I'm not sure if we're talking about using any money to throw the party but if we are, we cant really use any of the money we already have for the skate park.  The Tony Hawk funds are legally restricted and the other funds we raised are as well (meaning that the people who gave us money gave it to build the park, not to throw an event. If we used their money for something other than what it was designated for, it would probably preclude us from getting any other $ in the future).

We definitely should celebrate this stuff and generate excitement about the park (especially if its going to be a fundraiser).  In my opinion, getting the CDBG grant was a WAY bigger deal than getting Tony Hawk ...  the Tony Hawk grant is peanuts compared to the CDBG grant.  If we do have a party, maybe we could play up both grants.  Its good to show that the city is behind us, you know?

I was thinking like ryan. It'll be alot of fun. Itll be corny to use his name if he's not gonna be there. I wasn't asking for any grant $$$ but the $$$ that's already available that knox has $300 for a sound system so it can look official. I would like help with this if not monetary then with media or promotions. Ill forward everyone the flier when its done

My gut is that I'm disinclined to do any kind of event until we're breaking ground. I think that should be the priority.

dave rozza

But once we break ground we won't be able to do events there until its complete :)

If some people have time to organize an event, id say go for it.

That being said, I don't have any time to invest in planning anything right now...I'm focused on helping to get the weight calculations done for the DOT. Until that happens, we don't even know for sure that we can actually build what we want there.

Is the mural is getting painted on the 28th?  Who is doing the painting? If possible I'd like to talk with the artists.

I'd like to do something that hasn't been done before and get this art incorporated onto some Hartford made custom  garments. Can we do this?
