AllMusic's Donald A. Guarisco called the track "the oddest and most unusual and interesting combination of musical elements" from Nightflight to Venus, then picked it as one of his "track picks" from the album.[2]

The song has been covered by several other bands in varying musical styles. Finnish band Turisas recorded a folk metal version, while American band Boiled in Lead covered it as a folk punk song. The British comic book Nikolai Dante cited a lyric from the song for the title of its story called "Russia's Greatest Love Machine" in the 1997 issue of 2000 AD. The Washington, D.C.-based dance/rock band Ra Ra Rasputin takes its name from the song.[8] A Spanish version by Fangoria was included on their compilation album Dilemas, amores y dramas (2003).[9]

Finnish folk metal band Turisas recorded a cover of Rasputin, released on 21 September 2007 through Century Media.[55] The band played the cover live for a few years and finally decided to record a studio version of it because of positive feedback from fans.[56] A music video was shot as well.

The original Rasputin Music store was located at 2523 Durant Avenue where Sweetheart Café & Tea is located. They moved to Telegraph Avenue in the space now occupied by Blondie's Pizza, which was then also owned by Ken Sarachan. Rasputin moved across the street into a larger space at 2401 Telegraph Avenue when Odyssey Records went out of business. In the late 1970s it split into two separate locations, with one store specializing in rock music and the other in soul, jazz and other music genres. In July 1982, a fire at next-door Steve the Greek's restaurant destroyed the soul and jazz store. Rasputin's Berkeley operations were then consolidated into a single location. It currently operates at the corner of Telegraph Avenue and Channing Way.

Although in recent years its prices have become more commensurate with those of other music stores, Rasputin was known for offering low prices on new and used CDs, DVDs, and vinyl records compared to other Berkeley music stores like Leopold and Tower Records. Its selection of new vinyl is unusually rich, as is its selection of used CDs and DVDs.

Rasputin occasionally features in-store performances by top musicians and bands. Metallica made its first in-store appearance in almost a decade at the Rasputin Mountain View store as part of the April 19, 2008 "Record Store Day".[3] Metallica also performed there on record store day in 2016.

Founded as "Rasputin Records" in 1971 in Berkeley, California, Rasputin has grown to operate seven locations around the Bay Area and three locations in the Central Valley cities of Modesto, Stockton and Fresno. Rasputin has an extremely extensive variety of records, making it one of the must-visit spots on Telegraph Avenue for music lovers.

My first stop was Rasputin. I quickly made it to the vinyls and started my search. It seemed as though they had a really wide variety of indie, folk, rock, old school rap, old school R&B, and Motown. Artists like Lil 1/2 Dead, LL Cool J, Toro Y Moi, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and Young the Giant showed up pretty frequently. Newer records were priced fairly. I saw older records go as low as a couple of bucks, as though they were having a special sale. I did not find what I wanted to, but their international section did prove to be interesting. Although Juliette Greco was no where to be found, I found other French classics such as Serge Gainsbourg and Francois Hardy. Rasputin had a huge collection of music that I did not know (unsurprisingly). And so, I left empty handed.

Record stores have been hit hard by the rise of digital downloads and streaming music. Renowned music store Amoeba Records remains open on Haight Street, but sold its Hollywood building and may relocate.

"I loved seeing different people come together through a love of music and film. All of our little rituals we developed over the years," the original Reddit poster added, quoting a co-worker. "So many stories. Mostly about angry, aggressive, smelly, stupid humans we dealt with daily, but they were things unique to us, and our particular environment. I worked there nine years. It becomes home. A mad, dysfunctional home."

With a discography that includes albums on Digital Nations (a Steve Vai imprint), music critic Louis Raphael has always kept a pulse on the San Francisco music scene. After years as the San Francisco Music Examiner for Examiner.com and AXS.com, he decided to start Music in SF as a way to showcase what the San Francisco music scene really has to offer.
