Perhaps the most difficult aspect of roasting is controlling the bean-temperature Rate Of Rise just before and during first crack. Scott Rao - coffee consultant, trainer and author of the book "The Coffee Roaster's Companion" - shares his insights why to watch out for "the flick" and how to prevent it.

I have measured the color distribution of several ground-coffee samples from similar roasts that differed primarily in whether they flicked at the end. The flicked roasts usually produced a greater volume of grounds at the darkest color, with little other difference in the color distributions.

The flick may also mislead roasters in their understanding of how development time ratio (DTR) affects coffee flavor. Many roasters have told me that higher DTRs (i.e. 20% - 25%) produce roasty flavors (relative to bean color). But there is, in fact, a modest correlation between DTR and roastiness; every time one of those roasters showed me their ROR curves from the high-DTR roasts, their RORs contained flicks. The flicks, I believe, not the high DTRs, were the causes of the roasted flavors. All of the roasters who were open-minded enough to accept a range of DTRs while learning to smooth their RORs eventually found the roasted notes disappeared and their coffee was sweeter than it had been before.

This time of year is especially bad as most builders merchants stock all their boards in big cold, damp units so the boards can swell up a bit with the excessive moisture in the air.
Stick them on walls in a nice dry warm house and they will dry out and shrink.....this could be the cause of your cracks.
It only takes the slightest bit of movement for cracks to appear.
The cracks are perfectly manageable though, just get yourself a small bag of Gyproc Easi-Fill joint cement & some very fine sandpaper, mix a bit up then grab your wife's credit card to use for a spatula apply it well into the cracks & scrape off as much excess as you can as this will minimise sanding.
Let it dry thoroughly & then just a quick flick over with the sandpaper (if needed) & then re-decorate.

Muscle tendons can flick as they move over the bone, causing a popping noise. Tendons are the string-like structures that connect muscles to their supporting bone. When the tendons move over bone, they can click like guitar strings. If you have suddenly started experiencing one of these audible symptoms, then it may be worth having your shoulder assessed. Changes like this can be a sign that you've damaged one of the muscles or its tendons, so it may be worth having it investigated.

Note: IceBridge flew a second mission to the Pine Island region on Wed., Oct. 26. Look for more imagery of the crack coming soon. To see more pictures from the Oct. 14 flight, go to the NASA_ICE flickr page.
