Dear Dr. Starr and Board Members,
You have heard from me lately regarding Middle School Reform and once again I am completely bewildered and disappointed by the decision to transfer Mrs. Mara to Toquam. One of your key defenses of Middle School Reform was to provide a fair and equal education to all Stamford students and in particular those who are economically disadvantaged. Now that you are faced with a tough budget and cuts that need to be made, you decide to unfairly disadvantage an elementary school whose population is significantly economically disadvantaged. This decision makes no sense to me. Mrs. Mara and Mrs. Darling have spent the past year making significant strides in revitalizing our magnet program and increasing our lottery students. Hart is once again on the upswing and at a key point in our juncture when we have many new students coming in through redistricting and are continuing to grow our science and technology program; and now you are making decisions based on the size of our school building and not our needs. I thought our district was run on standards and if EVERY other elementary school with far less challenges than Hart has, has an Assistant Principal, how can you consider leaving us with an Administrative Intern? An AI is not the same as an AP and if you have to make a sacrifice somewhere – I implore you to not do it at Hart Magnet. We are the student population you are trying to improve and revitalize – leave us with appropriate tools to succeed.
Thank you for listening.

Hi all: Here’s my letter too:

Dear Dr Starr and fellow BOE members:
This recent proposal to remove our AP position at Hart school is a true blow to our efforts as the Hart community. We have persevered through much change in the last few years and now, just as we are making significant strides in progress, this is the decision proposed?
Does HART =TARGET?? Sadly, it seems so. Please tell us how to discuss all of these changes and administration upheaval with our children? What should we say to our children who think people leave them because they did something wrong? This cycle has perpetuated too long at Hart school and it is undermining all of us and our efforts. This is NOT the best alternative; in fact it could be the worst. As Anne Simmons mentioned, people will vote with their feet and move on.
What also must be considered are the other staff members who have had to endure these personnel shifts and emotional hurdles that come with continual change. We rely on the teachers and staff who remain in the building to encourage and develop our children and they are suffering along with difficult press and ever changing administration. This is a terrible message to send.
Ms. Mara has been an integral part of the Hart community. She is seen in the halls, talking to children and staff and her presence is felt. I, personally, have had a few disciplinary situations which we have worked closely to resolve and her strategy is working. Additionally, Ms. Mara and Mrs. Darling have been spending countless hours working toward enriching our school programs and developing relationships. Kindly don’t halt the progress she is making with the administration and move her elsewhere.
It is much easier to make decisions in a boardroom than in a classroom. Should you continue down this path, I ask that you draft a letter geared toward our children and personally come read it to them so they can hear it from you and you address their concerns directly as a parent versus a board member.
Sincerely,
Tara Heyel

Dear Members of the BOE:
As parents of a third grader from Hart Magnet Elementary School, we would like to know why our school is being targeted numerous times by frequently replacing the Assistant Principal bringing instability to the school administration.
We are thoroughly disappointed in your proposal to transfer Mrs. Mara to Toquam. There have been 3 replacements for the Assistant Principal position in the last 4 years and with a possibility of a 4th, it does not show your commitment to help our school.
As good parents instead of helping our daughter to achieve her academic goals, our thoughts and energy have to be focused on the frequent and unnecessary administrative changes at school.
Our expectations from the Board, of better programs and facilities, more teachers for the school, reducing the class sizes etc. have been marred and instead we see a high level of instability being created.
We believe that the Board will reconsider its proposal to transfer Mrs. Mara to Toquam and find other solutions. An Assistant Principal is necessary at our school and Mrs. Mara has played her role very well. She has done a lot for the school. She has also built a good relationship of trust and friendship with the children at Hart. Students at Hart deserve leadership consistency.
We implore you to let Mrs. Mara remain and help Hart to improve and to progress.
Sincerely
Luba Radoslavova
