During the last ten years the use of robotic-assisted rehabilitation has increased significantly. Compared with traditional care, robotic rehabilitation has several potential advantages. Platform-based robotic rehabilitation can help patients recover from musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Evidence on how platform-based robotic technologies can positively impact on disability recovery is still lacking, and it is unclear which intervention is most effective in individual cases. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of platform-based robotic rehabilitation for individuals with musculoskeletal or neurological injuries. Thirty-eight studies met the inclusion criteria and evaluated the efficacy of platform-based rehabilitation robots. Our findings showed that rehabilitation with platform-based robots produced some encouraging results. Among the platform-based robots studied, the VR-based Rutgers Ankle and the Hunova were found to be the most effective robots for the rehabilitation of patients with neurological conditions (stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson's disease) and various musculoskeletal ankle injuries. Our results were drawn mainly from studies with low-level evidence, and we think that our conclusions should be taken with caution to some extent and that further studies are needed to better evaluate the effectiveness of platform-based robotic rehabilitation devices.
While users are free to use the command-based libraries however they like (and advanced users are encouraged to do so), new users may want some guidance on how to structure a basic command-based robot project.
Main, which is the main robot application (Java only). New users should not touch this class. Robot, which is responsible for the main control flow of the robot code. RobotContainer, which holds robot subsystems and commands, and is where most of the declarative robot setup (e.g. button bindings) is performed. Constants, which holds globally-accessible constants to be used throughout the robot.
In Java, an instance of RobotContainer should be constructed during the robotInit() method - this is important, as most of the declarative robot setup will be called from the RobotContainer constructor.
The inclusion of the CommandScheduler.getInstance().run() call in the robotPeriodic() method is essential; without this call, the scheduler will not execute any scheduled commands. Since TimedRobot runs with a default main loop frequency of 50Hz, this is the frequency with which periodic command and subsystem methods will be called. It is not recommended for new users to call this method from anywhere else in their code.
Advanced users are free to add additional code to the various init and periodic methods as they see fit; however, it should be noted that including large amounts of imperative robot code in Robot.java is contrary to the declarative design philosophy of the command-based paradigm, and can result in confusingly-structured/disorganized code.
Notice that subsystems are declared as private fields in RobotContainer. This is in stark contrast to the previous incarnation of the command-based framework, but is much more-aligned with agreed-upon object-oriented best-practices. If subsystems are declared as global variables, it allows the user to access them from anywhere in the code. While this can make certain things easier (for example, there would be no need to pass subsystems to commands in order for those commands to access them), it makes the control flow of the program much harder to keep track of as it is not immediately obvious which parts of the code can change or be changed by which other parts of the code. This also circumvents the ability of the resource-management system to do its job, as ease-of-access makes it easy for users to accidentally make conflicting calls to subsystem methods outside of the resource-managed commands.
The Constants class (Java, C++ (Header)) (in C++ this is not a class, but simply a header file in which several namespaces are defined) is where globally-accessible robot constants (such as speeds, unit conversion factors, PID gains, and sensor/motor ports) can be stored. It is recommended that users separate these constants into individual inner classes corresponding to subsystems or robot modes, to keep variable names shorter.
There are three main thrusts to the research in the Model-Based Embedded and Robotics Systems (MERS) group: goal-driven interaction with robots, natural human/robot teaming, and robotic reasoning about the environment.
When combined, these research topics allow us to create cognitive robots that can be talked to like another human, can work with a team member to finish a task, can recover from many failures without assistance, and can collaborate with a human to recover from a failure that the robot cannot solve alone.
Behavior-based robotics (BBR) or behavioral robotics is an approach in robotics that focuses on robots that are able to exhibit complex-appearing behaviors despite little internal variable state to model its immediate environment, mostly gradually correcting its actions via sensory-motor links.
Behavior-based robotics sets itself apart from traditional artificial intelligence by using biological systems as a model. Classic artificial intelligence typically uses a set of steps to solve problems, it follows a path based on internal representations of events compared to the behavior-based approach. Rather than use preset calculations to tackle a situation, behavior-based robotics relies on adaptability. This advancement has allowed behavior-based robotics to become commonplace in researching and data gathering.[1]
Most behavior-based systems are also reactive, which means they need no programming of a chair looks like, or what kind of surface the robot is moving on. Instead, all the information is gleaned from the input of the robot's sensors. The robot uses that information to gradually correct its actions according to the changes in immediate environment.
Behavior-based robots (BBR) usually show more biological-appearing actions than their computing-intensive counterparts, which are very deliberate in their actions. A BBR often makes mistakes, repeats actions, and appears confused, but can also show the anthropomorphic quality of tenacity. Comparisons between BBRs and insects are frequent because of these actions. BBRs are sometimes considered examples of weak artificial intelligence, although some have claimed they are models of all intelligence.[2]
Most behavior-based robots are programmed with a basic set of features to start them off. They are given a behavioral repertoire to work with dictating what behaviors to use and when, obstacle avoidance and battery charging can provide a foundation to help the robots learn and succeed. Rather than build world models, behavior-based robots simply react to their environment and problems within that environment. They draw upon internal knowledge learned from their past experiences combined with their basic behaviors to resolve problems.[1][3]
The school of behavior-based robots owes much to work undertaken in the 1980s at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by Rodney Brooks, who with students and colleagues built a series of wheeled and legged robots utilizing the subsumption architecture. Brooks' papers, often written with lighthearted titles such as "Planning is just a way of avoiding figuring out what to do next", the anthropomorphic qualities of his robots, and the relatively low cost of developing such robots, popularized the behavior-based approach.
Later work in BBR is from the BEAM robotics community, which has built upon the work of Mark Tilden. Tilden was inspired by the reduction in the computational power needed for walking mechanisms from Brooks' experiments (which used one microcontroller for each leg), and further reduced the computational requirements to that of logic chips, transistor-based electronics, and analog circuit design.
A different direction of development includes extensions of behavior-based robotics to multi-robot teams.[4] The focus in this work is on developing simple generic mechanisms that result in coordinated group behavior, either implicitly or explicitly.
This dependency on rigid semiconductor-based electronics often restricts the potential of origami robots. Equipping external semiconductor-based electronics requires system integration thus increasing the complexity and weight of the resulting robots. These disadvantages mainly result from the undesired information transmission in the electro-mechanical interface17. The mismatch of stiffness between rigid electronics and the compliant bodies increases the difficulty of design, fabrication, and assembly18. Semiconductor-based electronics are typically vulnerable to adversarial environmental events, e.g., radiation and physical impact, which limit their applications19. The logistic needs on-site could restrict robotic rescuers involved in disaster reliefs and first aid in resource-constrained locations. The dependency on semiconductor-based electronics might inhibit the promised accessibility of the folding-based method20. Therefore, it is desirable to develop an alternative method for origami robots to achieve autonomy by embedding sensing, computing, and actuation into compliant materials21. This may lead to a new class of origami robots, with levels of autonomy similar to their rigid semiconductor-based counterparts, while maintaining the favorable attributes associated with origami folding-based fabrication1,17,22.
There have been increasing efforts in investigating the feasibility of integrating smart materials into origami structures and mechanisms to realize desired functionalities, including sensing, computing, communication, and actuation23,24,25,26. This parallels a broader exploration into non-traditional approaches to achieve information processing and control across a range of disciplines; this has led to the opportunity of using mechanical computing systems to augment traditional electronic computing systems27 in various fields, including soft robotics28,29,30,31,32,33, microfluidics34,35, mechanics19,36,37, and beyond38. To autonomously interact with the environment through integrating smart origami materials, an analogical sense-decide-act loop that emulates the language and structure of conventional semiconductor-based architecture should be formulated. This requires computing units that process information39, sensors that receive signals from the environment40, and actuators that execute commands to implement the response upon the feedback41. Furthermore, those three classes of components must form an ecosystem that accommodates both signal transmission and energy transduction. A few components and some of their assemblies have been demonstrated individually17,18,25,42,43. However, it is still very challenging to build integrated autonomous origami robotic systems mainly due to the lack of suitable computing elements that can interface with available sensing and actuating components42. High resistance or energy loss of building components44 and complicated fabrication39 of current computing architectures also contribute in part to the challenge. To the best of our knowledge, origami robots have not been demonstrated that can autonomously interact with the environment with sensing, computing, and actuating capabilities fully embedded in compliant materials.
