Ferrocement Rainwater Catchment Cistern Workshop


New Community Project (NCP) is pleased to offer a Ferrocement  Rainwater Catchment Cistern Workshop.  This course provides the opportunity to build a ferrocement cistern, while learning the necessary steps from design and construction to finishing details. 


When:  June 23-24 8:00-2:00

Where: Sustainable Living Center 715 N. Main St in Harrisonburg, VA

How much: $100 (3 work trade scholarships will be offered!)

How many: The course will be capped at 15 participants. Registration Required

Food: Snacks will be provided throughout the workshop. Participants should pack a lunch on Saturday. Sunday lunch (featuring pizzas baked in our cob oven!) will be provided!  

Proceeds: All proceeds support NCP’s local initiatives - promoting sustainable homes and communities in the Shenandoah Valley!

Hands on Experience Build a 1200 gallon cistern for a small market garden! Learn how to prepare the site, build the form, mix and apply stucco and install plumbing.  

Education and Discussion: Discuss the principles and advantages of ferrocement cistern construction, explore basic cistern design principles, discuss tank sizing, water quality and first flush systems.

Instructor:  Johann Zimmerman is a structural/civil engineer bringing extensive experience in sustainable and technically appropriate engineering projects.  He has built and given workshops in cistern building in Nicaragua and Africa, resulting in hundreds being built by homeowners, masons and community groups. He currently lives in Harrisonburg, VA and his work focuses on sustainable construction, consulting for projects in the developing world, and managing the design and volunteer construction work for the Central Valley Habitat for Humanity.
