Volunteers Needed for Container Loading to El Salvador

March 30th - April 2nd, 2023

Locals ride away on bikes shipped from BNB in Boston to CESTA in El Salvador

Dear Leslie,

Bikes Not Bombs is scheduled to ship a container of bicycles and parts to our partner, the El Salvadoran Center for Appropriate Technology (CESTA) in El Salvador next Thursday, March 30th through Sunday, April 2nd and we need YOUR help!

Join us on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday at our warehouse in Dorchester (10 Harvard Street in Dorchester, MA 02124) to help us with this extremely important work. Volunteer roles will consist of flattening bikes, sorting parts, counting bikes, and much more. Bikes Not Bombs staff will be present to guide and direct volunteers. View more information about what to expect and how to sign up below.

Location: The Bikes Not Bombs Warehouse at 10 Harvard Street in Dorchester, MA 02124.

Date and Times: Thursday March 30th to Sunday April 2nd during any of the following times:

  • 9 AM to 12 PM
  • 12 PM to 3 PM
  • 3 PM to 6 PM

We welcome all people to help for any amount of time, and volunteers may register for as many shifts as they are available.

What to Expect: Volunteers will arrive and be assigned certain roles. Some roles will require lifting bicycles throughout the day. We advise you wear closed-toed shoes and clothing you are not worried about getting dirty. Dress appropriate for the weather as the warehouse does not have cooling/heating and work will be performed outside. Bring your own work gloves if you have them. Food and coffee will be provided for volunteers!

Who are we shipping the bikes to?: CESTA, the El Salvadoran Center for Appropriate Technology, is leading the struggle for environmental conservation, sustainable transportation and community land management in El Salvador. CESTA combines an array of environmental and social programs with environmental and social justice activism, positioning CESTA at the forefront of social change in El Salvador.

CESTA’s programs include a bicycle mechanics training program for young people, mangrove conservation that focuses on community land management, disability rights advocacy, traditional medicine research and education, and environmental conflict mediation supporting communities that are in conflict with multinational companies over community land exploitation and environmental contamination. Bikes shipped to CESTA directly increase local access to high-quality bicycles creating access to affordable transportation to thousands of families each year, directly impact the young people who develop skills and leadership repairing the bikes, and directly support the broader environmental programs and activism of CESTA furthering large-scale social change in El Salvador.
