i am thinking of retiring my mp3 recorder.

is the zoom recommended? or simply the best for the low price?
Especially for mac?

I've owned the Zoom H4 for nearly a year and I use it almost every day.
I recommend it highly.

It has excellent built-in stereo mics, XLR connectors, phantom power for
your good condensor mics, and it makes really good recordings. It is a
4-channel multi-tracker, 2 at a time.

It even has mic modeling for the two built-in mics: Shure SM57, Senn.
MD421, Neumann U87, or AKG C414. The models work very well.

I've used it to record gigs in large rooms and smaller rooms, to record
practice and rehearsals, and even to lay down album-quality tracks. I do
all the mixing/editing/mastering on my computer using Adobe Audition. When
you connect via USB the H4 mounts as a drive, so there is no intermediate
step to export or import files. You just drag and drop.

Plan on spending some money for a larger SD memory card. A 2 Gig card works
best.

I spent $299 for mine the first week they came out, and I still feel that
was a bargain. I understand they have come down in price a bit, making them
a no-brainer.

I love mine. Apparently, everyone else on this list who owns one loves
it too. And I haven't read a review in any of the recording mags that
isn't highly positive.

I can't think of much that I would want a portable recording device to
do that the H4 doesn't do very, very well. It sounds great, it's easy
to operate, it's small, it's lightweight, yada yada. I paid $300 for
mine, and I'd pay it again if I had to.

Caveats:
I was initially worried about durability--it's made of plastic. But I
spent $15 for a padded hip holster for a portable digital camera, and I
haven't had a problem. Also, the H4 does NOT function as a continuous
mp3 player--you have to select and start a piece to play it. So it does
not replace your iPod. It can function as a USB audio interface, but
the latency is too high for it to be really usable for overdub recording
(although the quality of the audio it transmits via USB seems fine).
It's faster to transfer files from the H4 to your computer using an SD
card reader than using the USB cable.

None of these caveats is very important to me.

Use the money you save from the discount that dealer is offering to buy
a 2 Gbyte secure digital card, which will give you more than 4 hours of
continuous recording time in 24-bit 44.1 kHz mode (over 19 hours in 320
kbps mp3 mode). I also recommend rechargeable AA batteries if you plan
to do a lot of battery-powered recording.

I own and love my zoom H4. I haven't used any of the multi-track recording, but works great for recording live sound. It is easy to use via USB connection or pull the SD card and plug directly into an SD port (I have one on my printer). Easy to copy to CD.

What kind of Mac are you using. If it's a note book with an audio interface built in you
may only need the right software. I have some tunes on buddhasgarden that were done
with a mac notebook right from the board using peak.

The tunes are:Rumbas and Sapori.
