Some on the list refer to using several brands of diatonic harps.

I found much better consistency in my playing after unifying my kit to one
make-and-model. (example: bending technique would be over-kill on one brand,
and not enough on another)

I'd like to hear your experience, pro and con, for mixing harp brands in
your diatonic kit.

Play well

I used to be totally Lee Oskar, but over time I've included Hohner Pro Harps
and Golden Melodys. I have a Seydel, but only because I could afford just
one. Dan Axt

My performing set is all the same make and model of harp. My spare
set my be a different make and model, but it will be all the same
different make and model. I consider my instrument to be my set of
harps and I include only the same make and model of harp in each
set. I don't mix and match unless a harp fails or jams on a gig and
I need to use one from my spare set. (I always carry a spare set that
includes a least the 8 most used keys.)

I use all customized Hohners, except for one Seydel. The Seydel seems very
close to my Marine Bands and I would get more Seydels, when needed.

I have 3 different harp brands and 8 different harp models in my gigging case. I like the 'general' characteristics (ie; bright, tough, mellow, tuning schemes) of certain ones for specific songs in our catalog. Having all of these different harps also helps me pick out the correct harp in the heat of the battle and in the relative low light conditions at gigs.

Using a football analogy, my band's style is to not have a specific play list, and call audibles at the line of scrimmage so to speak - or if we do have a set list, it's never in any specific order. We go rapid fire song to song, so often I have no idea what's coming next. We do this to read the defense (audience) and call the song that we think will help us score.

I have several back ups for the keys I play a lot of tunes in and before a gig I play them off against each other and select the starting lineup for the show based on how I feel they are responding to playability and tuning.

In my gig case I currently have:

Hohner: SP20
MB Crossover

Suzuki - Manji
Harpmaster
Bluesmaster
Firebreath

Seydel - 1847
Session steel

I keep my harps in those zippered black cordura cases available from
coast to coast. Each case holds 7 harps and I generally have 5 of them
in my gig case: 2 sets of special 20's for primary and backup use,
another set of special 20's in oddball sharps & flats, one set of
golden melodies and a final set of odd's & end's harps--seydels, MB
deluxes, crossovers. I've become so accustomed to the weight and feel
of special 20's that I rarely stray from them--I tweak them a bit myself
and, increasingly, am playing harps which have been modified/enhanced
by a customizer. I use the golden melodies for tunes which call for
either 1st or 3rd position playing--to my ear, equal temperament tuning
works better for 3rd position and I also like the feel of golden
melodies when doing higher register 1st position playing. I also use
the golden melodies for jump blues or jazzy-sounding tunes, where I
anticipate wanting to play clean, fast runs and fewer chords. The set
of special 20's in oddball keys, low keys, etc are available for special
occasions and when an ornery guitarist calls out a less-commonly-used
key. I've tried every make and model of diatonic and this equipment
arrangement is what seems to work best for me.

I have mixed set of harps. And I tired of it. I used Golden Melodies
for years, I like response and tone. But I tired of retuning them. Now
I started to play Seydel 1847 and I still don't have all keys, so C,
D, G, Bb, LF are 1847, all flats are GM's. Now I'm not comfortable
with switching harps, and I hate when I have to play some odd key. I
also not comfortable with GM's I customized different years. My recent
work is perfect for me. My 2 years ago worked harps are not embossed
good and gapped too tight to get all overbends, but reeds sticks, my 3
years ago work embossed not good enough and have weak OB response. I
have about 90 harps, but I'm comlpetely happy with 3 of them and
almost happy with 3 more. Other needs some sort of recustomizing, but
I have no time as I work on orders for my customers.

Boris also left out that he is one of the ONLY 2 diatonic players on the planet that I can listen to ALL DAY. But then Boris wouldn't have known this...so I forgive him.
